How all West Texas girls basketball teams performed in the 2023-24 playoffs

Sixteen girls basketball teams in the San Angelo and Concho Valley area made it to the UIL playoffs with 14 of them winning at least one game. One, Goldthwaite, made it to San Antonio for the state tournament at the Alamodome.

Here’s a look at how every West Texas girls basketball team did in the postseason:

San Angelo Central

The Lady Cats entered the bidistrict round of the playoffs after splitting the District 2-6A championship with No. 19 Frenship after finishing with a 9-1 district record. The 2023-24 shared district title ended a 21-year drought for Central.

Central ended another drought after beating El Paso Franklin 69-51 for the team’s first bidistrict championship since 2021. However, the Lady Cats' breakthrough season came to an end in a 58-36 loss to No. 16 Fort Worth Boswell in the second round.

Wall

The No. 10 Lady Hawks finished as the second seed in District 6-3A behind No. 2 Jim Ned, but fell 49-45 to No. 12 Brock in the Region I-3A quarterfinal.

Goldthwaite

Eighth-ranked Goldthwaite won a tightly-contested game against its biggest district rival, No. 19 San Saba, 54-50 to claim a Region III-2A championship.

The Eagles' remarkable season came to a close against eventual state champions No. 4 Martin’s Mill in the state semifinal game with a 54-43 loss.

San Saba

Nineteenth-ranked San Saba finished one spot behind No. 8 Goldthwaite in District 29-2A with a 10-2 record and went all the way to the Region III-2A tournament.

San Saba started the tournament with an upset, beating No. 6 Shiner 66-58, but lost in the regional final.

Christoval

The No. 12 Lady Cougars won the District 7-2A title, finishing a perfect 14-0. Christoval made the trip to Lubbock for the regional tournament after a 48-44 win over Sundown, but fell in the regional semifinal 43-26 to No. 3 Farwell.

Mason

Unranked Mason was one of four teams in District 29-2A to make it to the Region IV-2A quarterfinal, where they lost 53-38 to district rival No. 19 San Saba.

Ozona

The No. 14 Lady Lions entered the playoffs as the second seed in District 7-2A with a 12-4 record, their only losses coming against Christoval.

Ozona pulled off a 51-48 win over Plains in the second round, but fell short of a regional tournament appearance in a 69-50 loss to New Home.

Miles

Miles entered the playoffs as the No. 1 seed and district champion for District 8-2A after finishing the season with a 9-1 record. However, Miles fell in the area round 64-43 to Sundown.

Coleman

The Bluecats finished the regular season with a 7-3 district record for the second seed in District 8-2A and won their bi-district matchup against Forsan. But they fell in the next round 39-24 to New Home.

Forsan

The Lady Buffs entered the postseason as the third seed in District 7-2A, but lost their bi-district matchup 43-36 to Coleman in a tightly-contested game.

Eldorado

Eldorado finished as the fourth seed in District 7-2A, with a 6-7 district record, and lost its bidistrict matchup 52-38 to Miles.

Rocksprings

The No. 3 Lady Angoras finished the regular season as the No. 1 seed in District 31-A with a 12-0 record. Rocksprings made it to the regional semifinal game, but lost 59-35 to No. 16 Neches who advanced to the state tournament.

Irion County

The No. 22 Lady Hornets were the top seed in District 11-A with a 9-1 record — one season after making a historic run to the state tournament. Irion County made it to the regional tournament again in 2024, but lost a 47-44 matchup to Westbrook in the regional semifinal.

Robert Lee

The No. 23 Lady Steers made another run to the regional tournament this season after finishing as the second seed in District 11-A with a 7-3 record. However, they could not break through the regional semifinal following a 53-41 loss to No. 4 Eula.

Menard

The No. 21 Yellowjackets finished as the first seed in District 12-1A, won two playoff games. but lost in the regional quarterfinal 44-29 to Irion County.

Richland Springs

The No. 7 Lady Coyotes ended the regular season as the first seed in 17-1A with a 10-0 record. They dominated their first two playoff matches but lost to Huckabay 52-43 in the regional quarterfinal.

Garden City

The Bearkats were the third seed in District 11-1A behind Irion County and Robert Lee and advanced to the regional quarterfinal where they lost to district rival Lady Steers 42-34.

Bronte

The Lady Longhorns finished the season as the fourth seed in District 11-1A but lost in the bidistrict round 35-29 to No. 21 Menard.
