West Texas football coaching changes for 2023

San Angelo TLCA Eagles

Old coach - Matt Jones | New coach - Paulo Gonzalez | 2022 Record 4-7

Matt Jones was the head coach for San Angelo TLCA for the past three seasons. Jones led the Eagles to a 4-7 record and the teams' first playoff birth since 2016 after two consecutive 0-10 seasons. After Jones stepped down at the end of the season, Paulo Gonzalez was hired on June 23 as the new head football coach. Gonzalez comes from Maypearl ISD where he served as the assistant head football coach last season.

Brady Bulldogs

Old Coach - Shay Easterwood | New coach - Jaron Roberts | 2022 Record 5-6

Shay Easterwood resigned as Brady's head football coach after five seasons to join the coaching staff at Abernathy. Easterwood led the Bulldogs to a 5-6 record in 2022-2023 and suffered a double-overtime playoff loss to Alpine in his last game. New athletic director C.J. Villegas hired Jaron Roberts, who was the defensive coordinator at Stamford, as the new head football coach on June 8. In 2022, Stamford gave up an average of 15 points per game and finished with an 8-3 record.

Water Valley Wildcats

Old Coach - Charles Boles | New Coach - Aaron Whitmire | 2022 Record 3-7

Charles Boles announced his retirement after leading Water Valley to a 3-7 record in their first season as an 11-man football team in District 2-2A. Offensive coordinator Aaron Whitmire was promoted to athletic director and head football coach on April 12.

Irion County Hornets

Old Coach - Don Coffell | New Coach - Shawn Harrison | 2022 Record 12-1

After producing their best season since 1971 and winning three playoff games, long-time head coach Don Coffell retired with a 36-9 record with the Hornets. Defensive coordinator Shawn Harrison takes his place as the new head football coach in 2023.

Bronte Longhorns

Old Coach - Tell Rutledge | New Coach - Open | 2022 Record 4-6

Bronte is looking for a new head football coach after going 4-6 in 2022 and moving down in classification from Division I to Division II.
