Declan Rice marked his return to former club West Ham by scoring a brilliant long-range strike and setting up two first-half goals in Arsenal's 6-0 win in the Premier League that saw Bukayo Saka gain some redemption on Sunday.

Rice was jeered relentlessly by many West Ham fans clearly still unhappy that he chose to move to Arsenal for a reported £105million in July. By the time he was substituted in the 67th minute, the England midfielder had helped to condemn his first club to one of its worst-ever losses.

West Ham conceded four times in a 10-minute spell before half-time, with Rice's set-piece deliveries assisting headed goals by Arsenal centre-backs William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes. Home fans were seen leaving the Olympic Stadium in the hundreds before the half-time whistle.

The £105million man endured a miserable first return to West Ham in November, coming on for the final 30 minutes as Arsenal crashed out of the Carabao Cup with a 3-1 loss.

West Ham fans taunted Rice with chants of: "You should have signed for a big club". He was booed by some supporters but also applauded by large sections of the crowd.

So, given the timing of the West Ham forward's appearance on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football this week — in the aftermath of Arsenal's "over-celebrated" victory against Liverpool and days before the Hammers meet Mikel Arteta's side themselves — it would hardly have been a surprise to hear the Jamaican stir the pot.

The midfielder has proved an inspired signing for the Gunners after joining them in the summer from West Ham for £105million.

Rice has been one of Arsenal’s players of the season and delivered in the biggest games, including last weekend’s win over Liverpool.

The England international has quickly become a leader in the Arsenal dressing room and asked if he could wear the armband if needed, Arteta said: “Yeah, he has got every skill.

Kalvin Phillips has said he "feels more alive" after moving to West Ham on loan following a frustrating period at Manchester City which included being called overweight by Pep Guardiola.

Speaking to the Observer, Phillips said: "Over the last 18 months ... I still loved the game, it just changed my way of thinking a little bit. The game wasn't letting me down but the fact I had nothing to look forward to kind of pushed me away.

"Now I'm here at West Ham and playing, I feel a lot more alive. It's not starting from scratch, it's starting afresh."

After the 2022 World Cup, Guardiola had said Phillips reported back overweight. Phillips does not dispute the point, but said a misunderstanding as to when he was expected to report back had contributed to the issue.

"After the World Cup was probably the toughest, when Pep came out and said I was overweight," Phillips said. "He was right to do so but there are different ways to go about it.

"I did not disagree with him but obviously I took a big knock on my confidence and how I felt at City. And my family were not happy about it, either. Especially my mum...

"It was just a misunderstanding and I think he was very frustrated with me coming back 1.5kg over my weight target."

Gabriel reveals key Mikel Arteta chat

Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes has revealed the summer chat with Mikel Arteta that convinced him that he had a future at the club.

The Brazilian has been a key part of Arteta’s lavish transformation of the Gunners into real title contenders, but saw his place under threat at the start of this season with the arrival of Jurrien Timber and a preference to play Ben White at centre-back and Thomas Partey at right-back.

The experiment lasted just two games, hindered largely by Timber’s serious knee injury, and Gabriel was soon back alongside William Saliba and has played almost every minute since. Sunday's London derby at West Ham will be his 150th appearance for the club.

"It was tough, obviously at the start. I wanted to play and it was very difficult for me but I understood what the coach had to do," Gabriel told PA news agency.
