West Ham vs Arsenal LIVE!

Declan Rice marked his return to former club West Ham by scoring a brilliant long-range strike and setting up two first-half goals in Arsenal's 6-0 win in the Premier League that saw Bukayo Saka gain some redemption on Sunday.

Rice was jeered relentlessly by many West Ham fans clearly still unhappy that he chose to move to Arsenal for a reported £105million in July. By the time he was substituted in the 67th minute, the England midfielder had helped to condemn his first club to one of its worst-ever losses.

West Ham conceded four times in a 10-minute spell before half-time, with Rice's set-piece deliveries assisting headed goals by Arsenal centre-backs William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes. Home fans were seen leaving the Olympic Stadium in the hundreds before the half-time whistle.

West Ham vs Arsenal highlights

  • GOAL! Saliba heads Arsenal in front

  • GOAL! Saka wins and scores penalty

  • GOAL! Gabriel makes it three before break

  • GOAL! Trossard scores fourth in first-half stoppage time

  • GOAL! Saka adds his second

  • GOAL! Arsenal make it six through Rice

“To be honest I’m really happy to achieve that, but I’m not sure I can be happy today - I missed some chances I should have scored.

“But it’s a great achievement.”

Arsenal are - and this will surprise you - on the attack. Mohamed Elneny and Eddie Nketiah have tried to add their name to the scoresheet and now Martin Odegaard will swing in a free-kick.

All jokes aside, the xG (expected goals) score for that half is probably the best evidence that it’s not a worthless stat.

West Ham were worth 0.01 goals!

A truly nightmarish first half for West Ham finally comes to an end.

David Moyes has as much experience as any manager out there, but even he will surely struggle to know what to tell his players in the dressing room right now.

Arsenal have simply swept the Hammers away on their own turf. Some West Ham fans are already leaving their seats — and you sense many will not return for the second 45.

West Ham 0-4 Arsenal | Half time!

More miserable defending from set pieces there by West Ham, who have now conceded three times in 12 minutes to all-but condemn themselves to defeat before the half-time whistle has even sounded.

West Ham 0-2 Arsenal | 42 mins

It almost feels like 3-0 is the most plausible scoreline at half-time. Can Arsenal show that ruthless edge to kill the game for good?

West Ham have been abysmal...

Arsenal reporter Simon Collings

14:43 , Marc Mayo

Big moment for Saka that. He missed a penalty here last season when Arsenal's title charge faded away. Cool as you like there.

GGGOOOAAALLLL!!! West Ham 0-2 Arsenal | Saka, 40'

14:41 , Marc Mayo

Alphonse Areola booked for cleaning out Bukayo Saka, which VAR has a check to rule out any offside.

It will be Saka to take... he scores!

PENALTY TO ARSENAL!

14:40 , Marc Mayo

Bukayo Saka in behind and tripped by Alphonse Areola... penalty!

Absolutely stonewall, that.

West Ham 0-1 Arsenal | 37 mins

14:39 , Marc Mayo

CHANCE!

Once again it’s Bukayo Saka in on goal, Martin Odegaard’s cute pass sets him through and he dinks the keeper... but puts it wide!

West Ham 0-1 Arsenal | 36 mins

14:37 , Marc Mayo

CHANCE!

It really should be 2-0. Jakub Kiwior swings in a peach of a cross right onto Bukayo Saka’s forehead but he nods wide!

West Ham 0-1 Arsenal | 34 mins

14:36 , Marc Mayo

That goal has set Arsenal fans off into their favourite ‘Tequila’ chant for William Saliba.

And, on the pitch, they’re on the front foot too.

A second goal would surely kill this game...

Arsenal reporter Simon Collings

14:35 , Marc Mayo

Another one for Nico Jover to add to his scrapbook, but surely West Ham should do better there? Arsenal tried that same corner four times already.

GGGOOOAAAALLL!!! West Ham 0-1 Arsenal | Saliba, 32'

14:34 , Marc Mayo

Another deep Declan Rice corner and this one finds William Saliba to head home!

West Ham 0-0 Arsenal | 31 mins

14:32 , Marc Mayo

You do get the sense Arsenal are missing a natural centre forward up top - as much as some of their fans may write that off as a cliche.

Gabriel Martinelli scampers down the left and lays a silky cross on a plate in the six-yard box, yet Martin Odegaard is a yard behind it as West Ham clear.

Football reporter Dom Smith

14:31 , Marc Mayo

It’s been typically one-way traffic from Arsenal, with David Moyes’ West Ham more than happy to concede possession and sit in their organised defensive shape.

The Gunners upping the ante just a touch in recent moments, with Saka and Rice seeing increasingly more of the ball.

West Ham 0-0 Arsenal | 28 mins

14:30 , Marc Mayo

The away end thinks the ball is about to nestle in the bottom corner after Martin Odegaard’s shot deflects across the face of the goal... but it bounces wide.

Good spell this from the Gunners yet the corner is repelled.

West Ham 0-0 Arsenal | 26 mins

14:28 , Marc Mayo

Good stuff from Edson Alvarez to beat a couple of tackles and carry the ball clear, but a poor pass allows Arsenal to grab back possession and kill the counter.

West Ham 0-0 Arsenal | 24 mins

14:25 , Marc Mayo

SAVE!

Superb stop by Alphonse Areola to tip over Leandro Trossard’s back-post volley!

West Ham 0-0 Arsenal | 22 mins

14:24 , Marc Mayo

Bukayo Saka nicks the ball off Emerson Palmieri and Arsenal race into space without a huge amount of pace, and West Ham get the numbers back to deal with it.

They come again with a lovely cross by Saka which Leandro Trossard heads over! He was unmarked...

Arsenal reporter Simon Collings

14:20 , Marc Mayo

A bit sloppy from Arsenal at times so far. Noticeable there how Gabriel and Rice both pulled Kiwior for a word. The left-back role is so key to how the Gunners build.

West Ham 0-0 Arsenal | 18 mins

14:19 , Marc Mayo

Good run and cross by Ben Johnson wins a West Ham corner, which sees Tomas Soucek flop to the ground in a minor tussle with Martin Odegaard... no penalty.

Football reporter Dom Smith

14:17 , Marc Mayo

Ben Johnson might be playing out of position as a left-winger, but he isn’t playing like someone who is being deployed somewhere unusual. He has been bright whenever he has received the ball down the left and has tried to make things happen. Impressive start from the Englishman.

West Ham 0-0 Arsenal | 14 mins

14:16 , Marc Mayo

A bit risky from Arsenal as they knock it around under pressure in their own half, Gabriel being forced to reach for an oddly dangerous William Saliba pass before Jakub Kiwior concedes a throw.

A chance for the hosts to build their own attack but a low cross is hacked away.

West Ham 0-0 Arsenal | 11 mins

14:13 , Marc Mayo

A bit of sustained Arsenal pressure building and Bukayo Saka’s hit from range deflects wide. Muted, and futile, appeals for a handball there but nothing in it.

West Ham 0-0 Arsenal | 9 mins

14:11 , Marc Mayo

Edson Alvarez booked for taking down Bukayo Saka, which leads to a forthright response from Arsenal teammate Gabriel.

Not really any case for that to be a sending off, fair call from the referee.

West Ham 0-0 Arsenal | 8 mins

14:10 , Marc Mayo

Decent work through Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli as the Brazilian spins in a good ball, yet nobody to slam it home as they settle for a corner.

Applause for Declan Rice as he steps out to take it, with a deep delivery headed down for the keeper to grab.

West Ham 0-0 Arsenal | 5 mins

14:07 , Marc Mayo

Decent start for both teams, Mohammed Kudus and Martin Odegaard making early in-roads in attack but the final ball not quite coming off. Lively.

Arsenal reporter Simon Collings

14:03 , Marc Mayo

As expected, Trossard playing as the No9 for Arsenal. Havertz back in midfield.

Some reasonably loud boos for former West Ham captain Declan Rice here, as he returns to face his former team but in Arsenal colours. Harsh!

Declan Rice sitting deep behind Martin Odegaard and Kai Havertz in midfield, with Leandro Trossard starting centrally up top. It’ll be flexible, though.

Mikel Arteta responds to celebration police

13:52 , Marc Mayo

Mikel Arteta will not hold back on his celebrations after accusations of enjoying Arsenal’s win over Liverpool a little too much.

Asked if he thinks there’s any relationship between the way a team celebrates winning and their maturity to claim the title, Arteta said: “If I think when I have won Premier Leagues somewhere else, the answer would be: ‘Big no’.”

Pressed why, Arteta said: “Because I have experienced it. That’s it.

“I’m not saying there isn’t. My experience says no but maybe someone says ‘my experience, yes.’ Mine says no because I have seen how to celebrate.”

West Ham boss on the game ahead

13:48 , Marc Mayo

David Moyes has just told Sky Sports that Kalvin Phillips will need a bit of time to get up to speed, “as everybody’s seen” he’s not ready to slot in as the West Ham boss had hoped.

He also says Ben Johnson has to be “flexible” in a “hybrid” role on the right wing.

Declan Rice also “deserves a great reception”, says Scot. “We always talk, he always comes and sees me... maybe [no hug] pre-match!”

Declan Rice to send West Ham a reminder

13:44 , Marc Mayo

Declan Rice is back at the London Stadium again on Sunday and this time the Arsenal midfielder will hope to enjoy a happier homecoming.

The £105million man endured a miserable first return to West Ham in November, coming on for the final 30 minutes as Arsenal crashed out of the Carabao Cup with a 3-1 loss.

West Ham fans taunted Rice with chants of: "You should have signed for a big club". He was booed by some supporters but also applauded by large sections of the crowd.

Mikel Arteta likes to use bad experiences as fuel for his players and he will have no doubt referenced that collapse in the build-up to the game.

What's at stake today

13:40 , Marc Mayo

It feels like a big one for Arsenal, who could win today to go within two points of leaders Liverpool and level with Man City... or find themselves five adrift with a defeat.

Particularly sitting three points off City having played a game more would not be a nice position to be in.

West Ham can go sixth if they win, a position they would then keep if Man United fail to beat Aston Villa later.

A draw nudges them above Newcastle to seventh, while they would stay eighth with a defeat.

Arsenal reporter Simon Collings

13:35 , Marc Mayo

That's a very light looking bench for Arsenal today. Three young academy players among the options for Arteta if he needs to change things. No wonder Arteta has recently said the squad is "thin".

Arteta confirms Smith Rowe not in the Arsenal squad after turning his ankle.

Jorginho on the bench after aggravating an underlying issue last week versus Liverpool.

West Ham know the hard slog ahead

13:31 , Marc Mayo

Michail Antonio is no stranger to the public airing of the odd punchy opinion, as West Ham supporters, David Moyes and, in particular, Tottenham striker Richarlison can all attest.

So, given the timing of the West Ham forward's appearance on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football this week — in the aftermath of Arsenal's "over-celebrated" victory against Liverpool and days before the Hammers meet Mikel Arteta's side themselves — it would hardly have been a surprise to hear the Jamaican stir the pot.

Instead, though, Antonio's impressive, insightful on-screen performance came without controversy and with plenty of respect paid towards the challenge that awaits West Ham on Sunday, as he nears a comeback after returning to training following three months out with an injured knee.

"When it comes to those games, it's so hard to compute everything you've got to do," he said of facing the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City. "When you come up against these teams, you just know you're going to be running a lot and it's going to be a hard day."

Hard, yes, but in recent times for West Ham, fruitful, too.

Interesting to see how the same West Ham XI who lost to Manchester United 3-0 last time out fare against Arsenal today.

West Ham have already beaten Arsenal twice this season, but Lucas Paqueta remains injured and so right-back Ben Johnson stays in that unfamiliar right-wing position.

Notable too that Kalvin Phillips remains on the bench after a testing start to his life with the Hammers.

Arsenal reporter Simon Collings

Havertz was great upfront last week against Liverpool, but personally think Arteta is right to put Trossard there. The Belgian has looked his best in the forward line and has struggled whenever asked to play as a left No8.

West Ham vs Arsenal | Countdown to kick-off

The warm-ups are getting underway in east London so let’s hear from Simon and Dom as they preview kick-off from the press box.

Mikel Arteta explains how Declan Rice has exceeded his expectations

13:20 , Marc Mayo

Mikel Arteta has hailed Declan Rice assuming a leadership role at Arsenal without wearing the captain’s armband.

The midfielder has proved an inspired signing for the Gunners after joining them in the summer from West Ham for £105million.

Rice has been one of Arsenal’s players of the season and delivered in the biggest games, including last weekend’s win over Liverpool.

The England international has quickly become a leader in the Arsenal dressing room and asked if he could wear the armband if needed, Arteta said: “Yeah, he has got every skill.

“Obviously he has been captain at youth level, he has been captain for West Ham and he is one that sometimes doesn’t need to have the armband.

“When he talks, people listen and pay attention - and he has got the natural ability to do that.”

Still no Gabriel Jesus for Arsenal

13:12 , Marc Mayo

Mikel Arteta makes two changes from the Arsenal team which beat Liverpool.

Oleksandr Zinchenko is out injured, so Jakub Kiwior steps in at left-back with Takehiro Tomiyasu also not in the squad.

Jorginho drops out for Leandro Trossard, and it looks on the teamsheet like Gabriel Martinelli will step into the central striker’s role.

Gabriel Jesus is out again but Bukayo Saka has been passed fit.

West Ham unchanged

13:08 , Marc Mayo

A bit of a surprise from David Moyes as he names the same XI that lost 3-0 to Manchester United last time out.

That means Ben Johnson is once again on the right wing ahead of Vladimir Coufal, with Danny Ings having to make do with a place on the bench.

Kalvin Phillips ready to turn a corner

12:49 , Marc Mayo

Kalvin Phillips has said he "feels more alive" after moving to West Ham on loan following a frustrating period at Manchester City which included being called overweight by Pep Guardiola.

Speaking to the Observer, Phillips said: "Over the last 18 months ... I still loved the game, it just changed my way of thinking a little bit. The game wasn't letting me down but the fact I had nothing to look forward to kind of pushed me away.

"Now I'm here at West Ham and playing, I feel a lot more alive. It's not starting from scratch, it's starting afresh."

After the 2022 World Cup, Guardiola had said Phillips reported back overweight. Phillips does not dispute the point, but said a misunderstanding as to when he was expected to report back had contributed to the issue.

"After the World Cup was probably the toughest, when Pep came out and said I was overweight," Phillips said. "He was right to do so but there are different ways to go about it.

"I did not disagree with him but obviously I took a big knock on my confidence and how I felt at City. And my family were not happy about it, either. Especially my mum...

"It was just a misunderstanding and I think he was very frustrated with me coming back 1.5kg over my weight target."

Gabriel reveals key Mikel Arteta chat

12:42 , Marc Mayo

Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes has revealed the summer chat with Mikel Arteta that convinced him that he had a future at the club.

The Brazilian has been a key part of Arteta’s lavish transformation of the Gunners into real title contenders, but saw his place under threat at the start of this season with the arrival of Jurrien Timber and a preference to play Ben White at centre-back and Thomas Partey at right-back.

The experiment lasted just two games, hindered largely by Timber’s serious knee injury, and Gabriel was soon back alongside William Saliba and has played almost every minute since. Sunday's London derby at West Ham will be his 150th appearance for the club.

"It was tough, obviously at the start. I wanted to play and it was very difficult for me but I understood what the coach had to do," Gabriel told PA news agency.

Our prediction for the Arsenal team

11:42

Predicted Arsenal XI: Raya; White, Saliba, Gabriel, Tomiyasu; Odegaard, Rice, Jorginho; Saka, Havertz, Martinelli

Early Arsenal team news

11:35

Arsenal are monitoring issues for Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko, but were more positive on Bukayo Saka after all three were forced off against Liverpool.

Takehiro Tomiyasu should be back after Japan were knocked out of the Asian Cup.

“[Saka] has been recovering this week and he looks okay,” said Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta. “We have a few still in contention.

“They’ve been evolving really well. Tomorrow we have another training session.

“We’re hopeful that we’ll have a few back and that we can put a very competitive squad out there.

“[Thomas Partey] is progressing really well, but it’s a bit too soon to tell you exactly when we’re going to have him back.”

Predicted West Ham XI: Areola; Coufal, Zouma, Aguerd, Emerson; Soucek, Alvarez; Johnson, Ward-Prowse, Kudus; Bowen

Early West Ham team news

The hosts are set to remain without Michail Antonio and Lucas Paqueta due to injury, but Alphonse Areola is available despite being taken off at half-time of the defeat to Manchester United.

Moyes will also have to decide whether to reintroduce Kalvin Phillips following a tough start to his loan spell in east London, while Ben Johnson's stint at right wing may be drawn to a quick close.

He told reporters on Friday: “Lucas Paqueta isn’t ready yet.

“Michail Antonio has started training, but has only trained for two days with the group. He’s still off it in terms of match fitness and being available.”
