Wentz watch: How many snaps Commanders QB played in Week 1

You thought because the Indianapolis Colts traded away quarterback Carson Wentz this offseason that he wouldn’t have an impact on the team’s future?

Think again, pal!

Even though Wentz is now leading the offense in the nation’s capital, there will still be a slight focus on his season with the Washington Commanders as it pertains to the Colts.

A part of the trade between the two teams included a condition with a 2023 draft pick. The language of the deal states that the Commanders’ 2023 third-round pick will turn into a second-round pick on the condition that Wentz plays 70% of the snaps this season.

Wentz is clearly the starter for the Commanders and after their Week 1 win, fans can feel more secure that he will approach the 70% threshold.

And we’ll be here to track it all season long.

Wentz vs. Jacksonville

Wentz returned to the field against the team from Duval for a rematch of the epic collapse that ended his season with the Colts in 2021. He played all 77 snaps for the Commanders. His performance in this game was nearly the epitome of his season with the Colts. He made some incredible plays throughout the game. He also made some ugly, bone-headed decisions—two of which resulted in interceptions.

On the day, Wentz completed 27-of-41 passes for 313 yards, four touchdowns, two interceptions and a 101.4 passer rating. Given that Taylor Heinicke and Sam Howell are behind Wentz, it’s important for him to play well if he’s going to stay on the field.

How this impacts the Colts through Week 1

The Colts aren’t paying attention to this. They made the deal in March and will likely re-visit at the end of the season simply to see where that draft pick will land. As it currently stands, the Colts don’t have their original third-round pick—they traded it in order to move up so they could select safety Nick Cross. Having three picks within the first two rounds would be a huge help in potentially moving up for a rookie quarterback.
