Weekend events offer activities for residents of all ages, interests

Mar. 14—"Downtown will be hopping this weekend," said Athens Main Street director Tere Richardson.

March 15-17 will see a variety of events around the Athens-Limestone area.

"The vibrant pulse of our downtown is fueled by tapestry of great events this weekend," Pammie Jimmar, president of the Athens-Limestone Chamber of Commerce, said.

Ranging from seasonal events to holiday celebrations, Richardson promises that there will be "something for everyone."

The Athens-Limestone County Chamber Home and Garden Expo will anchor the weekend from March 15-17 at Athens State University. Admission is $5 cash only, and kids younger than 12 are admitted for free. Visit the event's Facebook page for more information on what to expect.

There will be a family-friendly event to celebrate St. Patrick's Day on Friday as well. Beginning at 4 p.m., Athens Alehouse is hosting an event that will provide live music as well as activities for children as well as adults.

Saturday morning will start with a focus on a good cause. Athens-Limestone Hospital is hosting its Difference Dash 5K, benefiting the Athens-Limestone Hospital Ambassadors Scholarship Fund that allows young residents to learn more about the healthcare industry. Runners can register until Friday, March 15, at 5 p.m.

Athens Main Street will be busy Saturday with two events going on downtown. The morning and afternoon will see the Boutique Crawl, with purchase more than $20 eligible for entry into the contest for a $500 shopping spree. After the boutiques wind down, the city will focus on St. Patrick once again with the inaugural Downtown Athens Pub beginning at 4 p.m. Visit the event's Facebook page for more details and participating restaurants.

"The positive economic impact of these events will certainly be a huge help to our retailers and restaurants," Richardson said. "Additionally, with so much to do, we will see new people discovering our city for the first time."
