Week 7 Scoreboard: Six Richland County football teams take tough losses

MANSFIELD — It was a rough week for Richland County football teams in Week 7.

Just three teams picked up wins, Mansfield Senior, Crestview and Ontario, while six were dealt losses. Let's check in on how things went down in Week 7.

Lima Central Catholic 34, Lucas 27

The Lucas Cubs lost a heartbreaker on Friday night falling to Lima Central Catholic 34-27 in nonconference action.

The Cubs got on the board first when Zack Diehl plowed in from five yards out to give Lucas the 7-0 lead. After Lima Central Catholic answered with a pass TD and a missed extra point, it was 7-6 Cubs after the first quarter.

Diehl scored his second TD of the game to start the second and give the Cubs a 13-6 lead after a missed PAT. LCC then scored 14 unanswered to end the first half with a 20-13 lead.

The Cubs started the second half recovering the on-side kick and scoring four plays later when Dan Hockensmith rumbled in from two yards out to tie it up at 20 apiece. LCC responded with a score to make it 26-20 before Graysen Jackson ran it 30 yards for a score to put the Cubs back on top 27-26. LCC scored with 2:04 to go to make it 34-27 and sealed the victory with an interception on the second play of the Cubs' final drive.

Lucas falls to 4-3 and hosts Plymouth in Week 8.

River Valley 28, Shelby 24

The Shelby Whippets suffered an upset loss for their first L in Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference play falling to River Valley 28-24 on Friday night.

River Valley took an early lead before Skyler Winters evened things up for Shelby with a touchdown un with 5:44 left in the first quarter, but that was all the Whippets could do offensively as they trailed 14-7 heading into the halftime locker room.

The Whippets tied things up with 2:06 left in the third when Brayden DeVito hit Casey Lantz on a 40-yard strike before Lantz put the Whippets head 17-14 with a 30-yard field goal with 7:43 left to play in the game. RV scored to make it 21-17 before DeVito scored on an 18-yard run to put the Whippets back on top 24-21 with just 2:55 left to play but the Vikings rallied for a late score to give them the upset win.

The Whippets finished with 206 rushing yards on 35 attempts and threw for 247 on 13 completions. They had 13 penalties for 109 yards on the day. DeVito ran for 102 yards and a score on 14 carries while Winters added 85 yards and a TD on 16 touches. DeVito accounted for all 247 passing yards with a TD and an interception. Issaiah Ramsey was the leading receiver with 95 yards on four catches while Lantz had 85 yards on two catches and a TD. Miles Swicher had 43 yards on four catches and Winters added 23 yards on two catches.

Shelby is now 5-2 and 3-1 in the MOAC. The Whippets host Clear Fork in Week 8.

New Philadelphia 21, Madison 10

The Madison Rams took a 7-6 lead into the halftime locker room thanks to a touchdown pass from Cameron Kuhn to Grayson Sasis, but the Rams couldn't hold on to pick up their first win of the season falling to New Philadelphia 21-10.

Madison is now 0-7 and travels to Mount Vernon in Week 8.

Marion Harding 35, Clear Fork 7

The Clear Fork Colts dropped their sixth straight game on Friday night falling to Marion Harding 35-7 in Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference play.

After Harding jumped out to a 14-0 lead at the half, the Colts got on the board with 10:49 left in the third quarter when Marcus Hoeflich ran for 58 yards to make it 14-7, but the Colts wouldn't get on the board the rest of the night.

The Colts are now 1-6 and travel to Shelby in Week 8.
