January 11
New Rochelle 64, Mount Vernon 60
It wasn’t pretty, but that was mostly by design.
Mount Vernon forgot the scouting report on the way down the stairs from the locker room and let New Rochelle build an early lead. The Knights were a nuisance in scramble mode, allowing just six field goals after the intermission and nearly erasing a nine-point deficit in the last five minutes.
They got as close as 57-56 on a Nate Edwards bucket with 1:51 to go.
Lee Hesler, Kas Mirza and Matthew Sainvil locked up the win for the Huguenots at the free throw line. They were 15 for 23 at the charity stripe in the second half.

What it means
New Rochelle had answers. The Huguenots did have some difficult stretches, but rarely compounded mistakes. It’s not easy to win in that gym. New Rochelle found a way to protect a lead when the defense got fast and physical.
Mount Vernon is looking for the right combinations. Tayvien Tyler is the constant, but there’s not a lot of varsity experience around him. A few more games like this will get this group up to speed.
Box score
New Rochelle (11-0, 2-0): Lee Hester 12P, Matthew Sainvil 6P, Malik Gasper 12P, Izaih Augustine 3P, Sean Thomas 10P, Kas Mirza 21P.
Mount Vernon (5-3, 0-1): Tayvien Tyler 15P, Nate Edwards 17P, Kai Harvey 2P, Hadi Adeyi 12P, DayDay Staggers 2P, Gerald Jato 2P, Tristan Uzzle 10.
Three best players on the court
1. Tayvien Tyler; 2. Kas Mirza; 3a. Malik Gasper; 3b. Nate Edwards.
Quotable
“Mount Vernon always comes with that third press,” Huguenots coach Rasaun Young said. “We kept telling the kids, ‘It’s coming. It’s coming. Be prepared.’ They got us a couple of times, but for the most part we took care of the ball and we didn’t collapse like we usually do against Mount Vernon.”
“Right now, were really working on getting to know each other,” Tayvien Tyler said. “Some of the guys are still afraid to step up. There’s a lot of opportunity out there. I think today they got to see the atmosphere, they got to see how it’s going to be, all they have to do is pick up the energy.”
“I think it was a lot of fun,” Malik Gasper said. “Me and Kas (Mirza) were talking on every free throw at the halfcourt line about how the game was going and how much we were enjoying it. The atmosphere was great. We needed this a lot. We needed another test and we knew this team would give us one. We didn’t worry about the rivalry. We didn’t care about the rivalry. We just focused on keeping our streak going.”
