Week 5 Football: Edgewater, Apopka among 9 undefeated Orlando area teams

The clock is ticking on undefeated high school football teams in the Orlando area.

Nine programs throughout Orange, Seminole, Osceola, Lake and southwest Volusia counties enter Week 5 of the regular season without a blemish.

That number will dwindle by at least one as Edgewater (4-0), the No. 1 team in the Sentinel Super 16 rankings, plays Friday at No. 2 Apopka (3-0).

“Our schedule is pretty grueling, and Apopka is another great state of Florida power,” Edgewater coach Cameron Duke said after winning 31-14 vs. Jones. “We’re excited about going over there for it. I’d go to battle with this group any day of the week.”

The Eagles won 28-19 at home last year and 16-7 on the road in 2021. The Blue Darters, coming off of a bye week, have managed just 37 yards passing, 471 yards rushing and four offensive TDs this season.

No. 8 Winter Park (3-0) faces its toughest challenge to date against No. 14 Evans (2-2) at Showalter Field. The Wildcats have lost eight fumbles. Evans has forced four turnovers.

No. 9 Orange City University and Orlando Christian Prep entered the week 4-0. University was scheduled to play Thursday vs. Flagler Palm Coast (2-1). OCP travels to Lake Butler to play Union County (2-1).

Deltona Pine Ridge (3-0) is chasing its fourth win in a single season for the first time since finishing 9-2 in 2008. Host Lake Howell (1-2), which won 14-12 last year, stands in the way.

The Panthers are led by junior Chris Boddie, who has rushed for 524 yards and 7 TDs.

“He’s Mr. Clutch,” Pine Ridge coach Eric Poyner said. “We can give that guy the ball and we can depend on him, he can make stuff happen. He’s that good. He’s him.”

Tohopekaliga (3-0) hosts Melbourne (0-4) and Clermont East Ridge (2-0) is home vs. Davenport Ridge Community (1-3) in what appear to be favorable matchups.

Sophomore Sabby Meassick is 95-for-120 passing for 1,340 yards, 19 TDs and one interception for Toho.

No. 4 Lake Mary (3-0) is one of three ranked teams on the road against unbeaten out-of-area opponents. The Rams play at Port Orange Spruce Creek (4-0), a team they beat 19-0 last season.

No. 3 Seminole (3-1) travels to Vero Beach (3-0) and No. 11 Lake Minneola (1-2) goes to Daytona Beach Mainland (4-0).
