Wednesday's OSAA roundup: McNary baseball upsets South Salem to reach quarterfinals
The OSAA baseball and softball state playoffs continue Wednesday with the second round for Classes 6A, 3A and 2A/1A.
Wednesday’s winners advance to Friday’s state quarterfinals.
6A BASEBALL — MCNARY 6, SOUTH SALEM 5
McNary’s baseball team earned its second upset victory of the state playoffs, beating South Salem in the second round of the OSAA 6A state playoffs.
The No. 25 seed Celtics next will travel to No. 1 West Linn in the state quarterfinals Friday.
McNary has upset playoff wins this week against No. 8 Lincoln and the No. 9 Saxons, whose season came to an end with the loss.
6A BASEBALL — SPRAGUE 6, SHERWOOD 5
Sprague’s baseball team beat Sherwood in the second round of the OSAA Class 6A state playoffs.
With the victory, the Olympians will next travel to Jesuit in the state quarterfinals Friday.
“In the bottom of the 7th inning tied 5-5 with no outs and 0-1 count, our conference player of the year (Brandon Stinnett) hit his second home run of the game to walk it off for the win,” Sprague coach Luke Buchheit said. “It was a hard fought great team win vs a quality opponent in Sherwood.”
Jesuit is the No. 2 team in the state.
Sprague, the No. 7 seed, now has playoff wins against Sandy and Sherwood. Jesuit has playoff wins against Willamette and Ida B. Wells.
6A SOFTBALL — SOUTH SALEM 10, WESTVIEW 0
South Salem’s softball team cruised into the OSAA 6A state quarterfinals with a second-round win against Westview.
The No. 6-seeded Saxons next will travel to No. 3 South Medford on Friday.
South Salem has playoff wins this week against Roseburg and Westview.
6A SOFTBALL — SHERWOOD 5, MCNARY 3
McNary’s softball season ended with an OSAA 6A second-round loss to Sherwood.
No. 5 Sherwood advances to the state quarterfinals.
CLASS 2A/1A BASEBALL LOCALS
The Kennedy, Blanchet and St. Paul baseball teams all advanced to the OSAA Class 2A/1A state quarterfinals with second-round victories.
Kennedy beat Country Christian 16-3, Blanchet beat Grant Union 3-0, and St. Paul beat Gold Beach 16-0.
Regis lost 2-0 to Bandon.
CLASS 3A SOFTBALL LOCALS
Scio’s softball team advanced to the state quarterfinals with a 20-0 second-round win against Douglas.
Dayton lost 6-4 to Valley Catholic.
CLASS 2A/1A SOFTBALL LOCALS
The Blanchet, Kennedy and Willamina softball teams advanced to the state quarterfinals with second-round victories.
Blanchet beat Union 14-1, Kennedy beat Culver 11-1 and Willamina beat Illinois Valley 16-1.
Santiam lost 15-0 to Grant Union.
