Futures Collegiate League
Bravehearts 3, Vermont 0: Max LeBlanc and Grafton's Tyler Nielsen combined on a three-hitter, and visiting Worcester (26-9) rallied for their three runs in the eighth inning while extending their league lead over the potent Lake Monsters (24-11) to two games, in the opener of a two-game series at Centennial Field.
The Bravehearts won their eighth straight, while Vermont dropped its third in a row.
LeBlanc turned in another fine start for the Bravehearts, allowing just two hits and two walks over five innings while striking out seven. Nielsen (2-1), a former St. John's High left-hander who now hurls for the University of Maine, followed with four innings, also fanning seven while walking two and allowing just one hit for the victory. He struck out the side in the eighth while stranding two runners.
Mike Maher singled to lead off the eighth and went all the way to third base on Matty Warren's sacrifice, on which the first baseman committed a throwing error, with Warren taking second. With one out, Tyler Bastunas' single to left scored Maher.
Bastunas stole second before Jack Thorbahn walked to load the bases. After a second out, Marc Willi delivered a single scoring Warren, and Bastunas also came around on an error by the second baseman.
