Watertown places in five AA events and Aberdeen Central three in opening day of state meet

SIOUX FALLS — Deubrook Area swept the Class B 3,200-meter relays and Ipswich's Gracie Lange won the Class B girls' high jump to lead Watertown and Aberdeen area athletes Thursday during the opening day of the 2023 South Dakota State Track and Field Championships at Howard Wood Field,

Deubrook Area's Treven Grimsrud, Landen Johnson, Jaxon Quail and Gavin Landmark combined to win the Class B boys' 3,200-meter relay in a time of 8 minutes and 16.95 seconds.

Deubrook Area's girls also won the Class B girls' 3,200 relay in 9:46.23 with runners Nora Olsen, Makenna Ekern, Kylee Johnson and Ellie Olsen.

Lange cleared 5 feet, 2 inches to win the Class B girls' high jump.

Other area place winners, by division, on Thursday included:

Class AA Boys

Watertown: Juven Hudson, fourth in long jump (21-9.5). Hudson also joined Shey Coltrin, Jeremiah Schulte anjd Jaxson Fiechtner on the eighth-place sprint medley relay (3:39.61).

Aberdeen Central: Gabe Johnson, Carter Dingman, Drew Salfrank and Sam Schultz combined for a fourth-place finish in the sprint medley relay (3:38.25).

Class AA Girls

Watertown: Malia Kranz, sixth in shot put (39-0.75); Makenna Blank, eighth in long jump (16-1.25) and Elizabeth Lake, eighth in pole vault (10-0).

Aberdeen Central: Taryn Hermansen, second in shot put (42-2.75) and Ciara Frank, third in long jump (17-4.5).

Class A Boys

Deuel: Robert Begalka, sixth in discus (143-11). Second in sprint medley relay (3:40.09) with Braydon Simon, Oliver Fieber, Caleb Ronne and Ricky Berndt).

Florence-Henry: Adam Moe, tied for fourth in high jump (6-0).

Great Plains Lutheran: Lucas Johnson, tied for fourth in long jump (6-0).

Hamlin: Cristhian Rodriguez, third in discus (150-0) and Kaden St.Pierre (seventh in discus, 143-8).

Milbank: Second in 3,200 relay (8:04.75) with runners James Batchelor, Bryan Meyer, Garrett Mertens and Payton Brown and in seventh in sprint medley relay (3:41.68) with Jayden Johnson, Max Lightfield, Mertens and Brown).

Tri-State: Fourth in sprint medley relay (3:40.56) with runners Casey Litton, Owen Wood, Grayson Madsen and Kaleb Foltz.

Class A Girls

Estelline-Hendricks: Sadie Johnson, sixth in triple jump (33-9.5).

Great Plains Lutheran: Sixth in sprint medley relay (4:21.76) with runners Sophie Kannas, Keturah Schleusener, Katherine Prahl and Halle Bauer.

Mobridge-Pollock: Seventh in sprint medley relay (4:22.81) with runners Sophia Overland, Jayda and Ryli Thompson and Faith Heil).

Sioux Valley: Adison Renkly, fifth in triple jump (34-0.5). Fourth in sprint medley relay (4:19.12) with Renkly, Landree Wilson, Talya Vincent and Isabelle Bloker.

Aberdeen Christian: Abe Kretchman, second in triple jump (41-6.75).

De Smet: Kadyn Fast, eighth in triple jump (39-2.5).

Deubrook Area: Jake Jorenby, fifth in triple (40-6.25).

Frederick Area: Sixth in 3,200 relay (8:38.84) with runners Winston Clark, Stephen Achen, Brayden Sumption and Johnathan Bretsch.

Herreid-Selby Area: Brenden Begeman, fourth in triple jump (40-6.5).

Hitchcock-Tulare: Erik Salmen, seventh in discus (135-10).

Ipswich: Rasmus Loken, third and Brody Davis fifth (both11-6) in pole vault. Third in medley relay (3:44.04) with runners Colby Sylte, Trevor Heinz, Turner Thorson and Maxwell Kulesa) and fourth in 3,200 relay (8:35.18) with runners Thorson, Ian Beyers, Casey Geditz and Kulesa).

Leola: Dustin Wurtz, second in discus (148-4).

Potter County: Seventh in medley relay (3:47.18) with runners Sean Seurer, Tanner Frickson, Carter Luikens and Nicholas Schlachter.

Class B Girls

De Smet: Jada Burke, third in high jump (5-0).

Deubrook Area: Fourth in medley relay (4;25.97) with runners Brooke Koppatschek, Kadence Bowne, Miranda Moravetz and Johnson.

Frederick Area: Sofia Losure, tied for sixth in high jump (4-10).

Ipswich: Jalyssa Hutson, second (9-6); Marley Guthmiller, third (9-0) and Quincy Oliver eighth (8-6) in pole vault.

Iroquois-Lake Preston: Hadlee Holt, third in shot put (38-10.5).

Northwestern: Fourth in 3,200 relay (10:13.09). Payton Grandpre, Ella Boekelheide and Ella and Ashley Haven were the runners.

Potter County: Second in 3,200 relay (9:56.56) with runners Dannika Kaup, Rayel Persoon, Jadyn Ahlemaier and Emma Schlachter) and third in sprint medley relay (4:23.28) with runners Megan Seurer, Persoon, Kaup and Schlachter.
