Warriors’ Steph Curry opting out of joining Team USA for Tokyo Olympics
Coming off a scorching 2020-21 campaign that earned him votes for Most Valuable Player, Steph Curry won’t be on his way to Japan to represent Team USA in the Summer Olympic Games.
According to Shams Charania and Anthony Slater of The Athletic, the Golden State Warriors point guard has opted out of joining Team USA for the Tokyo Olympics. Curry joins LeBron James, Donovan Mitchell, Anthony Davis as star NBA players to opt-out of joining Team USA for the 2021 Olympic run.
Curry has only competed for Team USA in the FIBA World Cup, earning gold medals in 2010 and 2014. In 2012, Curry wasn’t selected for the Olympics in London and withdrew from summer games in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro after suffering an injury with the Warriors in the NBA postseason. The two-time Most Valuable Player will be 36-years-old for the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

Outside of Curry, Golden State forward Draymond Green has reportedly been one of the players to commit to Team USA. Green joins Portland’s Damian Lillard, Phoenix’s Devin Booker, Washington’s Bradley Beal, Boston’s Jayson Tatum, Brooklyn’s Kevin Durant and James Harden as some of the players on the Team USA roster, per multiple reports.
Team USA training camp for the Summer Olympics is set to begin on July 6 in Las Vegas. The Olympic basketball tournament will open on July 24.
