Wall Intermediate goes virtual after 27 cases of COVID-19 reported over 3 days

WALL — The township's intermediate school pivoted to virtual instruction this week after a spike of COVID-19 cases were reported within the school community.

"During the last three days, 27 new positive cases have been reported at WIS (Wall Intermediate School)," Superintendent Tracy Handerhan said in a letter to parents posted to the district website. "This short-term pivot to virtual instruction only applies to WIS; the other district schools will be operating as usual."

The local health department recommended the school switch to virtual instruction, she said.

Virtual instruction days would be held Wednesday through Friday. In-person classes are tentatively scheduled to resume on the following Monday. Handerhan said the date will depend upon COVID-19 infections and recommendations from the local health department.

The Monmouth County Department of Information reported 1,379 new COVID-19 infections across the county between Dec. 2 and Monday. Of those, 58 cases were reported within Wall.

"It is incumbent upon everyone in our school community to use best practices with respect to COVID-19 transmission prevention," Handerhan said in her email.

She urged parents to keep sick students at home, to wash hands with soap and water for 20 seconds, to practice social distancing, to mask in public settings, and to adhere to quarantine protocols, among other health measures.
