VOTING CLOSED: Who should be the Huntsville Item Player of the Week for Week 7?

Oct. 8—It was homecoming week for both football teams that took the football field in Walker County this week. Huntsville football opened its brand new Huntsville ISD Stadium with a win, while New Waverly faced off against Anderson-Shiro.

The Hornets walked away with a 17-3 win over the Rudder Rangers as New Waverly fell to the Flighting Owls by a score of 34-13.

With that, this week's football nominees are Huntsville's Austin Taylor and Jawann Giddens and New Waverly's Houston Forester.

Austin Taylor, Jr. QB: Taylor stepped up on offense when it was needed most. The junior found Melton Green III over the middle for the game-securing touchdown. Taylor threw for 208 yards and two touchdowns.

Jawann Giddens, Sr, LB: Giddens has made the transition to the defense and his presence has been felt. Giddens came up with a big interception and was a big part of the defense that held Rudder to 152 total yards.

Houston Forester, Sr, Ath: Forester has been a do-it-all player for the Bulldogs. Against Anderson-Shiro, he was big on both sides of the ball. Offensively, Forester had three receptions for 32 yards. He added 14 yards on the ground and scored both the Bulldog touchdowns. On the other side of the ball, he added 10 tackles, two sacks, two TFLs and a forced fumble.

Voting for The Huntsville Item Football Player of the Week will open at 8 a.m. Sunday and close at noon on Monday.

For the volleyball portion, all three teams hit the court as each squad is making a playoff push. Huntsville took on two district opponents and won both matches by sweeps. New Waverly saw a crushing loss to Tarkington in five sets on Friday. Alpha Omega Academy split its matches.

The nominees for volleyball players of the week are, Huntsville's Mylie Theisen, New Waverly's Addison Bostick and Alpha Omega's Claire Jackson.

Mylie Theisen, Jr, Huntsville: Theisen has taken on a different role for the Lady Hornets and has excelled. She came up big for Huntsville over the week with 29 kills and a 2.57% service received in the two games.

Addison Bostick, Fr, New Waverly: Bostick was big in the Lady Dogs Friday matchup against Tarkington. Bostick accounted for 22 points, she had 16 kills, four aces and two blocks. Bostick also had 23 digs in the match.

Clair Jackson, So, Alpha Omega Academy: Jackson was a strong setter for AOA in their two games. The sophomore helped set up 29 kills across the two games. She also had 15 digs and 15 aces to help her team.

Voting for the volleyball player of the week will open at 8 a.m. Sunday and close at noon on Monday.
