Tulare County high school athlete of the week: Redwood's Evan Gonzalez

Redwood High School baseball player Evan Gonzalez was voted by readers as the Visalia Times-Delta Tulare County prep athlete of the week.

In an online poll that closed on May 12, Gonzalez received 4,701 votes, or a 28.3% majority, of the 16,629 responses.

Gonzalez went a perfect 4-for-4 hitting. He pounded a double and home run and finished with five RBI and two runs to lead Redwood to an 11-0 win over Golden West.

Here are the choices for the week of May 8-12:

  • Maguire Barteau, boys swimming, Tulare Union: Barteau finished third in the 100-yard freestyle and fourth in backstroke at the 2023 Central Section Division II finals.

  • Ella Bettencourt, girls swimming, Central Valley Christian: Bettencourt placed first in the 100-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke at the 2023 Central Section Division II championships. She advances to this weekend's CIF State meet in both events.

  • Israel Briggs, boys track and field, Mt. Whitney: Briggs turned in a first-place performance in the long jump at the 2023 East Yosemite League championship meet.

  • Michaela Brown, softball, Redwood: Brown pitched a complete game with four strikeouts and zero earned runs to lead the Rangers to a 4-3 win over Monache. The Rangers clinched at least a share of the East Yosemite League championship.

  • Jonathan Callison, baseball, Tulare Western: Callison turned in a complete-game outing with four strikeouts to direct the Mustangs to a 5-2 win over Lemoore. He also had two hits, including a double, and an RBI.

  • Ashley Espino, softball, El Diamante: Espino pounded four hits, including a home run and double, to spark the Miners to a 9-3 win over Mt. Whitney. She also scored four runs and knocked in three more.

  • Evan Gonzalez, baseball, Redwood: Gonzalez went a perfect 4-for-4 hitting. He pounded a double and home run and finished with five RBI and two runs.

  • Carly Herrera, girls track and field, Tulare Western: Herrara won the 800- and 1,600-meter runs at the 2023 West Yosemite League championships.

  • Ava Olson, girls swimming, Tulare Union: Olson captured the 2023 Central Section Division II championships in the 200- and 500-yard freestyles. She advances to this weekend's CIF State meet in both events.

  • Alyssa Perry, girls track and field, Mission Oak: Perry placed first in the pole vault at the 2023 West Yosemite League championship meet.

  • Mateo Sanchez, boys diving, Golden West: Sanchez won the 2023 Central Section Division II title, placing first with a total score of 382.45.

  • Jeremiah West, boys track and field, El Diamante: West claimed the individual titles in the 100- and 200-meter dashes at the 2023 East Yosemite League championship meet.

Nominations are based on information available to the Times-Delta.

All high school varsity players from Tulare County can be on the ballot. Nominations must be received for consideration by Monday morning following that week's games.
