Tulare County athlete of the week: Mt. Whitney's Areli Tobon

Mt. Whitney tennis player Areli Tobon was voted by readers as the Visalia Times-Delta Tulare County high school athlete of the week.

In an online poll that closed on Oct. 20, Tobon received 7,908 votes, or a 57.6% majority, of the 13,800 responses.

Tobon wrapped up the first half of East Yosemite League play with a 6-0 singles record.

Here are the choices for the week of Oct. 16-20:

  • Jimmie Burk, football, Redwood: Burk rushed for more than 100 yards and scored two touchdowns to lead the Rangers to a victory against Monache.

  • Kenny Jackson, football, Mission Oak: Jackson rushed for 62 yards and caught five passes for 69 yards and a touchdown. He also had an interception on defense.

  • Miah Leal, girls tennis, El Diamante: Leal went undefeated in singles and doubles with wins over Porterville and Golden West.

  • Summer Parreira, volleyball, Tulare Western: Parreira finished with six digs, four aces, three kills and 13 assists in a win over Dinuba.

  • Isaiah Taylor, football, Woodlake: Taylor had 118 yards rushing and two touchdowns on just eight carries in a win over Farmersville.

  • Demaje Riley, football, Tulare Union: Riley caught two touchdowns as the Tribe defeated Mission Oak.

  • Lilliana Schemierer, girls golf, Redwood: Schemierer shot a 103 to lead the Rangers to the 2023 East Yosemite League team championship at Tulare Golf Course.

  • Hope Sierra, volleyball, Golden West: Sierra chipped in nine kills, three aces and five digs as the Trailblazers knocked off Mt. Whitney.

  • Aurora Sotelo, volleyball, Mission Oak: Sotelo fired 10 kills and 15 digs as the Hawks topped Tulare Union 25-23, 25-11, 25-17.

  • Areli Tobon, girls tennis, Mt. Whitney: Tobon wrapped up the first half of East Yosemite League play with a 6-0 singles record.

Nominations are based on information available to the Times-Delta.

All high school varsity players from Tulare County can be on the ballot. Nominations must be received for consideration by Monday morning following that week's games.
