Vote here for this season's first Storm Works Athlete of the Week in Girls Soccer

Welcome to the fall season.

The calendar has turned and the weather is starting to catch up. Brutal heat and humidity during the opening boys and girls soccer matches of 2023 gave way to more moderate conditions in the first full week of league action.

Some of the usual contenders are at or near the top of the standings in their respective divisions – North Kingstown’s boys and girls in Division I, North Smithfield’s boys in Division II, St. Raphael’s boys in Division III, Portsmouth’s girls in Division II, Westerly’s girls in Division III, the Rogers girls in Division IV. Who eventually emerges to challenge them over the next two months is part of the fun.

And that’s what we’re setting out to do here – have fun. Our Athlete of the Week polls don’t carry any monetary or tangible value. They won’t determine our All-State or Player of the Year honors at the end of the season. They’re simply a way to fuel some bragging rights and spark some interest over the next few weeks.

We need your help to do this. We’ll be at some games over the course of the year, but we can’t make it to all of them. Coaches and athletic directors are asked to report their scores to us by phone or by email. You can reach us Monday-Friday from 6-10 p.m. at (401) 277-7340 or any time at pjsports@providencejournal.com.

We can’t accept submissions from parents or family members. If you think we’re missing something or notice we didn’t receive a particular game report, please contact your coach or school administrator. They’ll be our official contacts when it comes to making our lists and checking them twice.

That’s quite enough of a preamble. Let’s go to our first batch of weekly honorees for the Storm Works Roofing & Restoration Athlete of the Week in Girls Soccer in 2023.

Fallon Bagley, Rogers

Bagley and the Vikings are scoring for fun in the early going. She racked up a combined nine goals through two matches, a pair of wins against Hope and Central. Rogers looks like one of the title favorites in Division IV.

Calla Bruno, Westerly

Bruno recorded a pair of hat tricks as the Bulldogs got off to a perfect start in Division III. She netted three goals apiece in victories against Lincoln School and the Shea-Tolman Co-op.

Amaya Coffie, Pilgrim

The returning All-State pick hit the ground running in the opener against Moses Brown. Coffie scored four times and added an assist as the Patriots doubled up the Quakers, 6-3, in Division I.

Emely Colocho, Central

The Knights cruised to a 5-0 victory against a co-op of four other Providence schools, and Colocho was the driving force. She put away a hat trick to help give Central its first Division IV triumph of the season.

Tessa Gagnon, North Kingstown

The sophomore striker had a 2023 debut to remember against Chariho. Gagnon fired home the opening goal and assisted on an Ellie Bishop strike in a 2-0 win. The Skippers are looking to defend the Division I crown they’ve captured in back-to-back years.
