Elizabeth Adebola, Perth Amboy

Once her confidence kicked in, the success took off. Adebola, who placed fourth in the state last season, repeated as a region champion and then claimed the state title in a thrilling run at 152.

Eva Altamirano, South Plainfield

Altamirano took time off in the middle of the season to enter the postseason fresh, and she was quite ready by late February. She put together a stunning run that included avenging an earlier loss to win a region title and claimed the state championship as the No. 4 seed at 126.

Thomas Brunetti, Hunterdon Central

Brunetti made his mark on the storied program’s history by setting the single-season win record, along with teammate Anthony Rossi. His terrific campaign included entering the state tournament undefeated and reaching the semifinals en route to a fourth-place finish at 175. He also captured gold medals in the H/W/S, district and region tournaments.

Brian Christie, St. Joseph

While Christie’s season ended after suffering serious knee injuries in the region semifinal, he made his mark with an incredible 104 career pins and a 119-27 record. The Appalachian State-commit placed third in the prestigious Beast of the East in December and won the Marinelli-Egg Harbor Tournament at 215. Additionally, he beat three state placewinners during the season, two by major decision. Both his losses pre-injury were by two points apiece to state runners-up.

Naylani Delvalle, North Plainfield

Delvalle didn’t know much about wrestling when she started last year. She quickly got up to speed with her athleticism and smarts in her first year competing. Delvalle captured a region title and became the school’s state finalist since head coach Jim Miller reached it in 1979. She also placed second at the Bloomfield Girls Holiday and the Lady Patriots tournaments at 185.

Anthony DiAndrea, Watchung Hills

While just a sophomore, DiAndrea brought a veteran’s presence and maturity to the mat and in how he carried himself. He coolly cranked out decisions in tough matches and repeated as Somerset County Tournament and district champions and won a region gold medal. He earned his second state medal (5th at 113) in two tries after placing seventh at 106.

Mike Feliciano, Colonia

Feliciano put together a fantastic season and entered the region tournament undefeated. Along the way, he won GMCT, district, Ricky I Memorial and Rahway Holiday Tournament gold medals. He placed third in the region and finished in the top 12 in the state at 175. Feliciano’s only losses were against three wrestlers who placed in the state’s Top 5. He finished with a 111-16 career record.

Aaliyah Matias, Perth Amboy

The sophomore just kept getting better and better as the season went on. She peaked down the stretch with a region championship and placed fourth in the state as the No. 8 seed at 165.

Jaden Perez, Delaware Valley

From fifth in the region to fifth in the state, Perez showed glimpses as a sophomore and had a full breakout this season. He opened his style and captured district and region titles and reached the state semifinals. Perez only had three decision defeats against the state’s second, third and fourth-place finishers at 126.

Saniyah Queen, St. Thomas Aquinas

Queen’s trophy case continued to grow as she earned the Outstanding Wrestler awards at both the GMCT (for Upper Weights) and region for her dominance at 145. She also won the Elizabeth Minutemen Tournament and entered the state tournament undefeated in a tough division. Queen beat the state champion Thea Rowland, 3-1, on Jan. 20

Logan Roman, Old Bridge

How’s this for a mark of achievement – Roman’s image adorned the front of a T-shirt the team gave out on alumni and youth night. He certainly leaves his mark on the Old Bridge program as one of the best wrestlers to wear the purple and black. He captured the Knights’ first state championship when he won at 113 in a memorable run last season. The Kutztown University-commit had a tough year on the mat after battling early injuries, then returned to win district and region titles. He was the top seed at 113, but missed the state tournament with a medical issue.

Anthony Rossi, Hunterdon Central

Rossi has been among the state’s best wrestlers the past few seasons, but just couldn’t crack the podium at Atlantic City. Until now. Rossi’s dominant campaign included going undefeated until the state semifinals. After a 3-0 loss, he bounced back to claim third place at 120. The Virginia-bound Rossi set the program’s single-season win record this year and his 125 wins are tied for sixth on the school’s all-time list.

Emma Sagi, Old Bridge

The senior earned her second state medal with a fourth-place finish at 126. She had a high-level 1-0 loss to state champion Eva Altamirano and split matches with state runner-up Jada Pichardo, Sagi earned gold medals at the Ron Mazzola Memorial, the Elizabeth Minutemen and Rumble in the Pines.
