Kate Walsh voted North Jersey Girls Basketball Player of the Week for Dec. 14-17

After four days of voting, Westwood senior forward Kate Walsh was selected as the North Jersey Girls Basketball Player of the Week.

Walsh averaged 23.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.5 steals as the Cardinals began the new season 2-0, defeating both Dumont and Fort Lee. In the former game, she poured in 31 to establish a new career single-game high.

Elea Benshoshan

Weehawken junior guard/forward

The Indians began the new season 2-0 with Benshoshan averaging 10.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 5.5 steals. She tallied 8 points, 5 rebounds, 6 steals and 2 blocks vs. Manchester, then had 12 points and 5 steal at Midland Park.

Olivia Buckingham

Secaucus freshman forward

Buckingham shot 55 percent (12-for-22) from 3-point range in two wins. She scored 26 points and made 8 threes against Saddle Brook, then had 22 points and 4 treys against Cresskill while holding the player she guarded to 0 points.

Lia Cruz

North Arlington senior guard

Cruz helped the Vikings to a 2-0 start by averaging 16.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.0 steals. She opened with 19 points, 4 rebounds and 4 steals against Lodi and followed up by making 4 three-pointers in a 14-point game at Emerson.

Marissa LaVerghetta

Mahwah senior guard/forward

In two victories, LaVerghetta scored 37 points on 79 percent shooting (15-for-19) and went 7-for-8 at the foul line. She also totaled 21 steals – 10 at Cliffside Park and 11 vs. Dumont – despite not playing in the fourth quarter of either game.

Siena Shuster

Wayne Hills senior forward

Shuster nearly averaged a triple-double in a pair of wins, registering 21.0 points, 9.0 rebounds and 8.5 steals per game. She had 9 steals in the opener against Bergen Tech, then added 8 steals, 3 assists and 3 blocks vs. Kennedy.
