Tenafly voted North Jersey Football Team of the Week for Week 1

After three days of voting, Tenafly was selected as the North Jersey Football Team of the Week.

The Tigers won their opener over Highland Park, 26-14, in coach Alonso Escalante’s debut. They scored the game’s final three TDs via special teams, defense, and offense: Eli Dzwonkowski had a 95-yard kickoff return, Devin Knause a 52-yard interception return and Cole Mogensen a 24-yard reception.

Here were the other nominees:

Bogota

The Bucs accomplished a rare season-opening feat for a small North Jersey school: they traveled out of state and beat New York’s Capital Prep, 21-6. Joseph Perpepaj scored on second-quarter runs of 13 and 15 yards and ran for a 2-point conversion. Jayden Gonzalez scored on a 21-yard run in the fourth.

Clifton

The Mustangs capitalized on big plays to defeat East Orange Campus, 30-12. Romelo Tables threw for 116 yards and three TDs. Nate Cerneri caught TD passes of 64 and 22 yards and returned a kickoff 79 yards for a score. Devon Stroble rushed for 89 yards and added three tackles and an interception.

Dumont

The Huskies won their season opener for the fourth consecutive year, 14-7, over Bergenfield. Josiah Guzman was 8-for-14 for 84 yards, including a game-winning 5-yard TD pass to Jeremy Quezada in the fourth. Joseph Papp scored on a 59-yard run in the first quarter for a 7-0 lead.

Pascack Valley

The Panthers opened with a 34-21 win over Ramsey, one season after losing their opener to the Rams, 35-0, and starting 0-4. Kevin Regula ran for 134 yards and three TDs. Adam Shaw passed for 163 yards and a TD and ran for 47 yards and a score. Dante Ricciardi had 12 tackles, including three for losses.

Passaic Valley

The Hornets scored four TDs in the first quarter of a season-opening 43-6 win over West Milford. Damian Kribs ran and passed for first-quarter TDs and totaled 99 yards rushing and 113 yards passing with two scores. Eric Allmendinger had first-quarter scores on a 90-yard run and 68-yard punt return.

Ramapo

The Green Raiders defeated New York powerhouse Somers, 38-34, on a controversial final play: Gavin Taylor’s diving catch near the goal line was ruled a 39-yard TD. Landon De Prima threw for 400 yards and a school-record six TDs. Zach Schnorrbusch had 12 catches for 132 yards and three scores in this opener.

Ridgefield Park

The Scarlets, playing their opener, registered a 26-13 win over a Demarest team coming off a season-opening victory. Francisco Then ran for 164 yards and two TDs and threw for 90 yards, including a 5-yard score to Miles Green. Kevin Velasquez ran for 142 yards, including a fourth-quarter score.
