VOTE: The News-Press Athlete of the Week presented by Babcock Ranch for Feb. 12-17

Each week, The News-Press staff will select one finalist in each high school sport. Nominees are derived from scores and stats emailed by Lee County’s coaches during the week to sports@news-press.com. Readers can then vote in the online poll to determine who the Athlete of the Week will be.

The poll will be posted at news-press.com each Monday, and voting will end at 10 a.m. Thursday each week.

Last week, Bishop Verot basketball player Caroline Ward won with 63% of the vote.

Here are the nominees for Feb. 12-17

Boys basketball

Gabe Timmons, Gateway Charter

Timmons led the Griffins with 26 points on 10-of-11 shooting to help defeat Bradenton Christian 83-68 on Thursday. He also had 7 rebounds.

Boys soccer

Erwin Navarro, Fort Myers

Navarro scored a pair of decisive goals last week, helping the Green Wave to 1-0 playoff wins against Wharton and Sunlake last week.

Girls soccer

Kelsi Longabardi, Mariner

Longabardi was responsible for her opponents' own goal off a flip-throw and added two assists in the Tritons' 7-1 regional palyoff win against Naples on Friday. She also scored a goal in the team's win against Seminole on Tuesday.

Boys wrestling

Jonathan Martinez-Mercado, South Fort Myers

Martinez won the title at 144 pounds at the Class 2A-12 wrestling meet, pinning his opponent in the final bout on Friday and helping the Wolfpack come in first as a team.

Girls wrestling

Noelia Varela, Riverdale

Varela won the regional title at 145 pounds, finishing with pins in each round and helping the Raiders come in first as a team on Saturday.

Girls weightlifting

Maya Egalite, Fort Myers

Egalite was a state runner up at 199 pounds, totaling 385 pounds in Traditional lifts at the state championships on Saturday. She also came in sixth in the Olympic category.
