Vote for Livingston Daily Athlete of the Week (April 22-27, 2024)

One of my favorite regular-season events of the spring is the Brighton Bulldog Invitational track and field meet, held the final Saturday of April.

The risk for me when covering a meet with a lot of schools from outside of Livingston County, however, is that I could spend all day at the event and not come away with a good story. This risk holds true when I cover other sports, too. Soccer can be the worst. If the team you cover gets shut out 2-0, like happened in the first game I covered this season, it gets difficult coming up with an interesting story for your readers.

Fortunately, I didn’t have that problem Saturday.

Storylines were everywhere, as county athletes had amazing performances from sprints to distance to the field events. I had one story already written when a better story emerged later in the meet.

I could actually fill this week’s Livingston Daily Athlete of the Week ballot with athletes from that meet, but several of them received extra coverage for their efforts in the article. As I’ve mentioned before, I like to put athletes in the ballot who haven’t been featured in a recent article and who haven’t been on a recent ballot.

Voting is open until 3 p.m. Wednesday. Vote early, vote often.

Howell tennis player Estie Sura was last week’s winner. She might be the first girls tennis player to ever win Athlete of the Week.

While you're here (and thank you for being here), this is where I remind you that you won't find much coverage of Livingston County sports anywhere else, especially once football and basketball end. It costs only $1 for six months of unlimited digital access to all of the Livingston Daily's great high school sports coverage throughout the spring.

Brayden Crowe, Hartland baseball

Crowe went 9-for-14 with four doubles and 16 RBIs in four games last week. He leads Livingston County by far with a .569 average and 28 RBIs in 51 at-bats.

Alyse Daavettila, Hartland soccer

Daavettila scored five goals in only one half, including four in a row, during a 9-0 victory over Howell.

Carrigan Eberly, Brighton track and field

Eberly won the 3,200-meter run in the Brighton Bulldog Invitational with a time of 11 minutes, 28.62 seconds. She also anchored the winning 3,200 relay team.

Zaryah Griffin, Pinckney soccer

Griffin scored six of Pinckney’s 11 goals in three victories last week. She had one goal in a 2-0 victory over Ypsilanti, four goals and one assist in an 8-0 victory over Tecumseh and the winning goal with three minutes left in a 1-0 victory over Williamston.

Riley Morton, Brighton golf

Morton shot 72 to tie for third place and lead Brighton to a record score of 292 in the KLAA preseason tournament. It was the lowest team score by one stroke in any KLAA preseason and final tournament.
