VOTE for the Herald-Tribune Athlete of the Week for April 15-20

Each week The Herald-Tribune staff will select one finalist in each high school sport. Nominees are derived from scores and stats emailed in by Sarasota and Manatee county coaches during the week to htincoming@gmail.com. Readers can then vote in the online poll to determine the Athlete of the Week.

Last week's winner was Sarasota High softball player Carley Ramsden, winning the April 8-13 poll with 43.66% of the vote.

The poll will be posted at heraldtribune.com each Monday, and voting will end at 10 a.m. Friday each week.

The nominees for April 15-20 are:

Weightlifting

Kale Bunce, Palmetto: At the Class 3A Boys USA Weightlifting Florida High School State Championships, Bunce took first in the 169-pound division with a combined lift of 575 pounds in the Olympic discipline (snatch and clean and jerk).

Track & field

Christopher Priede, Venice: At the Sarasota County Track and Field Championships, Priede took first in both the 110-meter hurdles (15.65) and 400-meter hurdles (55.20), the latter a PR.

Flag football

Cydnee Brooks, Braden River: In her team's 41-0 victory over Estero in a Class 1A regional quarterfinal game, Brooks, playing quarterback, accounted for all of her team's points. She finished 14-of-17 for 205 yards, throwing four touchdowns, rushing for a TD, and returning an interception 30 yards for a score. She also had another pick in the game.

Softball

Desiree Aiken, Palmetto: In her team's 5-0 victory over 15-3 Riverview, Aiken hurled a complete-game one-hitter, allowing one hit with 10 strikeouts. At the plate, she finished 3-4 with a home run, double, run scored and two RBI.

Baseball

Nate Winterhalter, Venice: In Venice's 7-2 victory over Parrish, Winterhalter came on in relief of starter Jackson Lucas and pitched three innings, not allowing a run and striking out six.

Boys lacrosse

Mickey Cohen, Lakewood Ranch: In his team's 16-15 victory over Manatee in the Class 2A-11 district final, Cohen scored the tying goal with 0.1 seconds left in regulation, then scored the game-winner with 53.7 seconds left in the first sudden-death overtime. Cohen finished the game with three goals.

Girls lacrosse

Haley Rosa, Saint Stephen's: In her team's 16-4 victory over St. Petersburg Catholic in the Class 1A-10 district final, Rosa finished with seven goals and three assists.
