VOTE: Gastonia, Shelby nominees for high school sports athletes of the week (April 29)

Here are nominees for Gastonia and Shelby area basketball, baseball and softball players of the week for April 22-27, 2024.

Our weekly top performers list and athlete of the week nominees are compiled from information provided to The Gaston Gazette and Shelby Star by coaches, athletic directors or team statisticians through emails, MaxPreps or mentioning @JoeLHughesII in game results and highlights posted to social media.

If a top performer’s name doesn’t appear on the list, encourage their coach to email submissions to jhughes@gastongazette.com or sports@gastongazette.com.

HOW WILL THE DUST SETTLE?: Big week ahead for Big South 3A as baseball, softball decide league champions

Baseball Player of the Week

  • Ronald Costner, Highland Tech: Was 9-for-13 last week with two doubles, a triple, three RBIs and eight runs scored as the Rams earned wins in two of three games.

  • Levi Jenkins, West Lincoln: Was 4-for-6 with two RBIs and two runs scored this past week in wins over East Burke and Lincolnton.

  • Marshall McGowan, Burns: Hit .625 last week with two home runs, a double, five RBIs and scored five runs in a two-game sweep of Shelby and a win over Draughn.

  • Eli Newsome, Cherryville: Had a hit and scored a run in a 13-0 win over Bessemer City. He followed that effort by throwing a complete game, allowing no runs on one hit with 18 strikeouts in a 3-0 win over the Yellow Jackets.

  • Aidan Taylor, Kings Mountain: Finished the week 4-for-6 with an RBI and three runs scored. He pitched 9 ⅔ innings as well, striking out 13 batters to help the Mountaineers split a pair against South Point.

Softball Player of the Week

  • Riley Bryant, Cherryville: Was 8-for-11 with three doubles, two triples, seven RBIs and three runs scored as the Ironmen picked up three wins over the course of last week.

  • Peyton Cook, Burns: Was 5-for-6 with two doubles, five RBIs and five runs scored this past week in a two-game sweep of Shelby.

  • Ciara Nanney, Gaston Christian: Was 8-for-11 with two doubles, three RBIs and a run scored as the Easgles picked up four wins last week.

  • Blair Riley, Forestview: Finished 9-for-11 at the plate with a home run, three doubles, four RBIs and nine runs scored in wins over East Gaston, South Point and Hunter Huss.

  • Sara Rose Warlick, Crest: Was 5-for-6 with two home runs, a double, five RBIs and six runs scored in wins over Hunter Huss and North Gaston.
