Results: Week 2 Athens-area high school football player of the week

The results are in and it's time to announce the winner of the Athens-area high school football player of the week title for Week 2.

Madison County senior Zahkari Shiflet took the top spot with 53.31 percent of the votes. Clarke County players took the other two podium slots, senior Kendrick Curry in second with 41.39 percent and junior Corey Watkins Jr. in third with 2.95 percent of the votes.

Clarke Central survives wild fourth quarter, snaps losing streak to Oconee County

Week 2 football player of the week nominees

Corey Watkins Jr., Clarke Central

Watkins Jr. ran for a pair of touchdowns in Clarke Central's nail-biting 38-31 victory over Oconee County. He rushed for 141 yards, and ranks sixth in the state for rushing yards with 356 total.

Kendrick Curry, Clarke Central

Curry scored one touchdown and ran for 66 yards in Clarke Central's 38-31 win over Oconee County.

Titus Watkins Jr., Oconee County

Watkins Jr. completed 28 of 44 passes for 389 yards and rushed 106 yards for two touchdowns in Oconee County's 38-31 loss to Clarke Central.

Aaron Philo, Prince Avenue Christian

Philo completed 16 of 25 passes for 230 yards, ran for two touchdowns home and threw for three more scores in Prince Avenue Christian's 42-0 road win over Nashville Christian at UT Chattanooga.

Sammy Brown, Jefferson

Brown ran for 130 yards and posted 12 tackles in Jefferson's 30-14 win over Wren (South Carolina). He ran for 12- and 22-yard touchdowns in the second and third quarters, respectively.

Jaden Butts, Jefferson

Butts returned an interception for a touchdown in the third quarter of Jefferson's 30-14 win against Wren (South Carolina)

Camden Smith, Madison County

Smith rushed 27 times for 274 yards and three touchdowns. He completed 3 of 4 passes for 82 yards and one touchdown, too, in Madison County's 55-35 win over Elbert County.

Casen Duggins, Madison County

Duggins snagged a 33-yard touchdown pass from Smith in Madison County's 55-35 win over Elbert County.

Zahkari Shiflet, Madison County

Shiflet ran 10 times for 119 yards and four touchdowns in Madison County's 55-35 win over Elbert County.

Tysean Wiggins, Commerce

Wiggins opened scoring for the Tigers at Murphy (North Carolina) with a 37-yard run. He later added a 27-yard run, scored off a fumbled kickoff return, and added another touchdown on an 85-yard dash in Commerce's 56-13 win over Murphy.

Jaiden Daniels, Commerce

Daniels finished with 218 rushing yards and scored three touchdowns on a 56-yard run, 65-yard run (on a third-down-and-15 play) and a 55-yard run to solidify Commerce's 56-13 victory over Murphy.

Xavier McCoy, Winder-Barrow

McCoy scored both of the Bulldogg's overtime touchdowns in Winder-Barrow's 28-27 double overtime victory against M.L. King.

Drew Richardson, East Jackson

Richardson ran for two touchdowns and threw a scoring pass in East Jackson's 42-14 win over Social Circle.

Henry Sanders, Westminster Christian

Sanders ran for two touchdowns in the first half of Westminster Christian's 27-6 win over Peachtree Academy.

Josh Adams, Bethlehem Christian

Adams led the way for the Knights with three rushing touchdowns, helping Bethlehem Christian in its 51-0 victory over Creekside Christian.

M.J. Spurlin, Jackson County

Spurlin ran for four touchdowns for Jackson County, though the Panthers fell short in double overtime 35-34 to Duluth.

Jamari Welch, Athens Academy

Welch added three second-half touchdowns, scoring on a 30-yard run in the third quarter and reaching the end zone on runs of 8 and 70 yards in the fourth quarter, though it wasn't enough for the Spartans, who lost 41-21 to Mobile Christian (Alabama).

Collin Eishen, Apalachee

Collin Eishen recorded a 75-yard touchdown reception for Apalachee, who lost 50-7 at Central Gwinnett.
