Chaparral swimmer, Campo Verde flag football player voted Arizona Republic athletes of week

Hudson Schuricht of Chaparral and Madison Coger of Campo Verde have been selected as this week's Arizona Republic high school athletes of the week. They were chosen by readers on azcentral.com from among three nominees in our weekly polls for each award, sponsored by Diamond Kitchen & Bath.

Schuricht was nominated in the boys' poll for his performance in last Saturday's AIA state swimming championships. He was part of the relay team that set a state record in the 200-yard medley relay. He also set the individual state record in winning the 100 breaststroke, and took first in the 200 individual medley.

Also nominated were Jordan Blake, Skyline football, who ran 42 times for 302 yards and three TDs in a 42-38 loss to Sunnyslope; and Alex Bland, Flagstaff, cross country, who won the AIA Sectional at Glendale Heroes and followed that with the Division II state boys' championship in a time of 16:30 on Saturday.

Coger was nominated in the girls' poll or her performance in last Saturday's first-ever 5A state flag football championship game. She caught a TD pass, ran for another and had two interceptions in the Coyotes' 14-13 win over Canyon View. She also was credited with blocking a potential game-tying extra point when the kick struck her face.

Also nominated were Iona Moffat, Cactus Shadows diving, who took first place in shattering a 10-year-old state record in the 1-meter at last week's Division II state diving championships; and Mila Russo, Gilbert Christian cross country, who won the D-III state championship Saturday in a thrilling finish, when she out-sprinted Ganado sophomore Damira Allen with a time of 19:32.3 to Allen's 19:32.4.

Nominees are based on performances in AIA-sanctioned sports. Polls are posted on Monday and voting closes at 5 p.m. on Wednesday.
