Vote: Ames Tribune Athletes of the Week for April 15-21

This past week saw the last push to qualify for the Drake Relays by Ames-area track and field athletes, and it was another busy stretch for local golfers, tennis players and soccer players.

The Drake Relays high school field was set Friday. There were some strong performances from Ames-area female and male high school track and field athletes during the week as they looked to earn a shot to compete at Drake Stadium in Des Moines this Thursday through Saturday.

There were tremendous efforts in high school girls and boys soccer, golf and tennis from the Ames area during the week.

Here are the Ames Tribune's female and male Athlete of the Week candidates for the week of April 15-21. AmesTrib.com readers vote to determine the winners, who will be announced at the end of the week.

Girls

Emersen Motl, Ames

Motl shot the best 18-hole round of the season for the Ames girls golf team during the Lamson Invitational April 15 at the Willow Creek Golf Course in Des Moines.

Motl shot a 76 for Ames to finish medalist runner-up behind Marshalltown's Natalie Henson.

Rebecca Schrader, Gilbert

Schrader was part of two victorious events for the Gilbert girls track and field team at the Tiger Relays April 18 in Carroll.

Schrader won the girls open 400 with a time of 1:04.28. She also ran the opening leg on Gilbert's victorious 4x400-meter relay team that cruised to victory in 4:08.95.

Olivia Axmear, Nevada

Axmear was the meet medalist for the Nevada girls golf team during the Ballard Invitational April 15 at the Ballard Golf and Country Club in Huxley.

Axmear shot a 41 over nine holes to win medalist by two strokes.

Makenna Carlson, Roland-Story

Carlson earned medalist honors at the Bondurant-Farrar quadrangular meet held April 15 at the Terrace Hills Golf Course in Altoona.

Carlson shot a 73 over 18 holes to win medalist by five strokes over her younger sister Brinley. Roland-Story shot a 322 as a team to take first by 76 strokes over Woodward-Granger.

Sophia Clawson, Colo-NESCO

Clawson won two individual events for the Colo-NESCO girls track and field team at the Colfax-Mingo Co-Ed Invitational April 15 in Colfax.

Clawson took first in both the open 400 and the 400 hurdlers. She won the 400 in 1:05.17 and the 400 hurdles in 1:16.00.

Boys

Jordan Thoen, Ames

Thoen had a big game for the Ames boys soccer team during a 10-0 victory over Fort Dodge Friday at Ames High.

Thoen put four goals on the board for the Little Cyclones. He also dished out one assist.

Isaac Brown, Collins-Maxwell

Brown won both the open 100 and 200 races for the Collins-Maxwell boys track and field team at the Penick Relays in Conrad April 18.

Brown took first in the 100 with an impressive time of 10.81 seconds. He won the 200 in 23.69.

Max Davidson, Ballard

Davidson won both the boys 1,600 and 3,200 races at the South Hardin Invitational Co-Ed track and field meet Friday in Eldora.

Davidson completed the 3,200 in in 11:02.34 to win the race by nearly 23 seconds. He won the 1,600 in 5:07.50 to edge South Hardin's Gavin Runyon by three seconds for the victory.

Ryan Lynch, Gilbert

Lynch turned in an impressive 1-under-par round during an 18-hole dual meet between Gilbert and Adel-Desoto-Minburn at the Ames Golf and Country Club April 15.

Lynch finished with a 70 over the 18 holes. He won medalist by three strokes and helped Gilbert shoot a 292 as a team to beat ADM by 14 strokes.

Carter Holland, Nevada

Holland won the boys open 800 at the Newton Co-Ed Invitational April 18 at Newton.

Holland crossed the finish line in under two minutes. He finished with a time of 1:58.92.
