The polls are open!

It's time to vote for the Volusia-Flagler Athlete of the Week for the week of Oct. 16-21. Athletes for all in-season sports are eligible.

Last week, Father Lopez swimmer Matt Alvarez took home the honor, claiming 44% of the votes.

The News-Journal gathers nominees from scores and stats emailed to the sports desk during the week by coaches across the area. Coaches can email nominees to cvinel@gannett.com.

Voting will close at 5 p.m. Thursday. Votes are restricted to once per device per hour.

Bowling

Brayden Barnes, Seabreeze: Barnes bowled a 300 game and a 579 scratch series, which is the best in the area this season.

Cross Country

Mason Brown, University: The senior placed 13th after crossing the finish line in 18:20.20 at the East River Last Chance meet.

Noemi Malinowski, Matanzas: The freshman took second at the Volusia/Flagler 9th and 10th Grade Championships with a time of 22:09.20.

Andrew Richter, Calvary Christian: The senior placed sixth at the Wildwood Invitational, finishing with a time of 20:21.68.

Golf

Jack Rossheim, Father Lopez: Rossheim shot a 1-over-par 37 to pace the field in a win over DeLand.

Swimming

Zoee Fulton, Father Lopez: The freshman earned a district title in the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing in 1:07.46 at the District 3-1A meet. She also served as one-fourth of the victorious 400-yard freestyle relay team.

Volleyball

Mili Avila-Bauzo, Pine Ridge: The senior recorded a team-best 17 kills in a 3-0 sweep of Tavares.

Skylar Johnston, Spruce Creek: The senior had 10 kills and 4 blocks in a 3-0 win over Lake Mary.

Emma Van Deusen, DeLand: The senior collected 16 kills to lead the Bulldogs during a 3-0 victory over Seminole.

Ivy Westfall, New Smyrna Beach: The senior tallied a team-high 24 digs and 16 serve receptions in a 3-1 win over Forest.
