Volleyball roundup: BBE serves its way past Royalton

Oct. 12—BROOTEN — Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa cemented a share of the Central Minnesota Conference volleyball title on Thursday.

The Jaguars swept Royalton, 25-16, 25-18, 25-21, to improve their record to 6-0 in the CMC with one match to play. BBE will try to win the conference outright at 7 p.m. Tuesday at home against Paynesville. The Bulldogs are 6-1 in the CMC.

Before the match, BBE head coach Alanna Hunter was scouting the Royals' junior varsity for how the team played in serve-receive. The Jaguars found the holes with 10 ace serves, led by five from Kacey Fischer.

"I was scouting the JV match and saw a little film on Royalton and a lot of their serve-receive was unbalanced; two people deeper and a short player, or over to one side a little bit," Hunter said. "They were leaving a lot of holes on the floor."

Hunter added on Kacey's big night at the service line, "The last couple games, she's really come into her own in figuring out the rhythm in her serves. It's nice to see her do that."

Since Sept. 25 against Parkers Prairie, BBE has been utilizing a two-setter system with junior Kylie Weller and freshman Kamie Fischer. The system worked effectively against Royalton as Kamie had 19 set assists and Weller added 16. Brooklyn Fischer paced the Jaguars' offense with 17 kills, followed by 12 from Kacey Fischer.

"We put a lot of practice and prep into this, and a couple games before the transition, we got (Kamie) on the floor to be comfortable," Hunter said. "Both Kylie and Kamie set very similarly, so that made the transition easier."

Along with playing for an outright conference title on Tuesday, BBE is also hosting Dig Pink Night. They'll honor Tiffany Breitbach, a longtime assistant coach who also served as co-head coach in 2021 when Hunter went on maternity leave.

"She was diagnosed with breast cancer this spring, so it's going to be a big night for us," Hunter said. "Tiffany has family from Paynesville, too, so we scheduled it specifically to help bring those relationships together. There'll be a big silent auction before the game and if she's feeling good, we'll have time to reflect on how much she's meant to the program."
