Volleyball: Coldwater sweeps Pennfield, Quincy splits tri

BATTLE CREEK – The Coldwater varsity volleyball team went on the road Wednesday and brought home a big conference win, defeating the Pennfield Panthers in three sets by scores of 25-16, 25-11 and 25-6 in Interstate 8 volleyball play.

Coldwater was led on the night by Mackenzie Scheid who had a team high 20 kills to go along with eight digs and a 2.6 serve receive.

Elli Foley had a big game at the setter spot for Coldwater, recording 26 assists, 16 digs, six kills and two aces.

Also adding to the Coldwater win was Maren DeBeau with five aces and 13 digs; Mya Porter with five kills and seven digs; Morgan Dancer with six digs while passing a 2.5 on serve receive; Jalean Sloan with four kills; and Ava Longstreet with three kills.

Coldwater improves to 20-11-3 overall on the season with the win and 2-1 in the Interstate 8. Coldwater will return to action Saturday when they host a non-conference quad beginning at 1 p.m.

In the freshman contest Coldwater fell by the scores of 15-25 and 17-25. No individual stats were available.

Quincy volleyball finishes 1-1 in non-conference tri-meet 

QUINCY – The Quincy Orioles finished 1-1 at a non-conference tri-meet Tuesday night, splitting with Sand Creek and Sturgis on their home floor.

Quincy defeated Sand Creek by scores of 25-23 and 26-24 before falling to Sturgis by scores of 9-25 and 23-25.

“We played some of our best volleyball since August tonight,” said Quincy head volleyball coach Alixandra Nietzert.

Leading the Orioles in the digs department was Danika Skirka with 22, followed by Olivia Davenport with 17.

Anna Richer led the team in kills with 18 followed by Alyssa McCavit with 16.

Josie Mescher notched 13 assists on the evening while Abby Leosh led the squad with five aces. Elly Brewer also had a solid night, recording 12 digs, six kills and 17 assists.

Quincy’s record now stands at 4-7-4 overall on the season. The Orioles will next see action Thursday when they travel to Michigan Center.

Athens falls to Mendon in three sets 

MENDON – The Athens Lady Indians dropped a conference road clash with Mendon Tuesday night, falling by scores of 22-25, 20-25 and 15-25.

Piper Porter led the Athens effort with 18 kills, 18 digs and one ace while Camdyn Roach added 15 assists, 11 digs and one ace.

Rounding out the Athens effort was Raelee Vaughn with five assists and seven digs; Kami Parlin with three assists, seven kills, and eight digs; Kalecia Garza-McNutt with one kill; Mallory Kincaid with one ace, one assist and 11 digs; Katelyn Roe with one dig; and Grace Paul with one ace, three assists, one kill and one dig.

With the loss Athens falls to 4-2 in the SCAA on the season.
