While 2020 was the deadliest year in Akron, when police reported 50 murders to top the previous record of 48 set in 1974, this year is on track to be close, with more than 30 deaths on record through the end of July and nearly half a year to go.

This year's count in the city thus far is just under the 33 murders reported in all of 2019 and 32 in 2018. Last year, after suffering an average of one murder per week through mid-October, a nearly three-month gap in killings kept the number of deaths down to 42.

Not all violent deaths are classified as murder. Homicides are deaths that include instances where someone acts in self-defense, or when the perpetrator is charged with a lesser crime, such as manslaughter. Some cases remain under investigation, such as the officer-involved shootings that killed Lawrence Rodgers on Feb. 22 and Jayland Walker on June 27.

Almost all of this year's deaths have involved guns. The following is a list of homicides reported in and directly adjacent to the city, according to the Summit County Medical Examiner's Office.
