Expectations high for deGrom for rest of season
Drew Silva breaks down Jacob deGrom's first few starts of the season with the Mets and why he is more than capable of meeting expectations as he looks to help the team clinch the NL East.

DREW SILVA: After putting together one of the best first halves in franchise history, the Mets are looking like an even better team in the second half with the return of Jacob deGrom. He missed all of April, May, June, and July while recovering from a stress reaction in his right shoulder, but deGrom made his season debut on August 2 and has since scattered three runs over 10 and 2/3 innings while tallying 18 strikeouts to just one walk. On Sunday versus the division rival Braves, he whiffed 12 batters and passed Yu Darvish for the most strikeouts all time through any pitcher's first 200 Major League appearances.
Still able to touch triple digits with his fastball and uncorking mid-'90s sliders, you can almost forget that he was ever hurt at all. Over his last 93 starts, dating back to the beginning of the 2018 season, deGrom holds a dominant 1.95 ERA, 0.87 WHIP, and 12.0 K per 9. That all creates lofty expectations, but deGrom is more than up to the task of meeting them as the Mets aim to lock up the NL East and stage a deep postseason run.
