For the first time since training camp began, injuries were a story for the New York Giants on Tuesday.

The biggest news was that wide receiver Victor Cruz was held out of portions of practice because of a “tight groin”. He did participate in some early receiving drills.

After practice, Cruz said that he felt soreness early in practice.

“It happened during practice,” Cruz said. “Just a little tightness. I didn’t want to push it and make it worse, so I just told the training staff and they shut me down.”

Cruz attempted to downplay the injury.

“I kind of get one every camp,” he said. It’s just whether I play through it or it just times up on an off day or something like that. It’s just a little tightness. I just have to get in the training room, ice it up and it’ll be all right.”

Giants head coach Ben McAdoo said it’s too early to know if Cruz will play in the Giants’ preseason opener against the Miami Dolphins on Friday. Cruz said that it normally takes a few days to work through the soreness, which certainly puts his availability in question.

“I haven’t spoken to anyone, whether it be Coach or the training staff or anybody about Friday,” Cruz said. “I’m sure it clouds it up a little bit.”

Cruz has missed 26 of 32 games in the last two seasons because of injuries to his knee and calf. He insists that he’s “not frustrated” by this latest roadblock in his comeback attempt.

“I just have to listen to my body and make sure I’m going about this the right way,” Cruz said. “I don’t want to ignore something and then have another setback.”

Safety Landon Collins went down on Tuesday as well. It appeared very serious at first but Collins was checked out by the training staff and McAdoo said that he was simply kicked.

“I think he’s tight, but looks to be fine,” McAdoo said.

Defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul left practice briefly with a stinger but returned. Linebacker Keenan Robinson (groin) and safety Nat Berhe (hamstring) did not practice. Defensive tackle Jay Bromley (ankle) and linebacker J.T. Thomas (hamstring) are still on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list.
