USF men to host Virginia Commonwealth in NIT second-rounder Sunday

USF fans who shoehorned themselves into the Yuengling Center for three sold-out games down the final stretch of the Bulls’ surreal season will get a chance to re-create that raucous atmosphere one more time.

The Bulls (25-7) will host Virginia Commonwealth (23-13) in the second round of the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) Sunday at 7:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPNU.

VCU advanced with a 70-61 triumph Wednesday at Villanova. The winner faces either Iowa or Utah on the road next Tuesday or Wednesday in the NIT quarterfinals.

USF has reached the NIT quarterfinals once (1995) in eight previous trips to the tournament.

Tickets for Sunday’s game go on sale to the general public today at 2 p.m. Season-ticket members were to receive emails on how to reserve seats, with the deadline for purchase today at 2 p.m. The school also was set to release student-ticket information directly to students today.

The Bulls and Rams — members of the Atlantic 10 Conference — have four common opponents. VCU split a pair of games with league foe Massachusetts, which defeated USF by 10 points in early December. The Rams lost by five on Dec. 6 to Memphis, which USF defeated 74-73 on Jan. 18 after rallying from a 20-point deficit.

Both teams also defeated Loyola-Chicago and Temple in the regular season.
