Which USA TODAY Sports writer stands alone in his Rose Bowl prediction?

With the college football bowl season about to kick things off, it is time to officially go on the record with some bowl game predictions. USA TODAY Sports writers did just that with their bowl game predictions for every bowl game being played this season, including Penn State’s matchup with Utah in the Rose Bowl. But if you were looking for any sign of optimism from the writers in these predictions, you may be out of luck.

Just one of the six USA TODAY Sports writers picked Penn State to win this season’s Rose Bowl. That one bold prediction comes from Erick Smith, who has been a bit higher on the Nittnay Lions at times this season than the mainstream, so this prediction may not be too out of left field.

The five other USA TODAY Sports writers — Scooby Axson, Jace Evans, Paul Myerberg, Eddie Timanus, and Dan Wolken — all are riding with the Pac-12 champions, the Utah Utes. The pick of Utah is a safe one as the Utes are a slight favorite in Pasadena over the Nittany Lions. And considering the style of football Utah plays, along with the fact this is a return trip for Utah after playing in the game last season, it does make sense to pick Utah.

But, of course, with these picks now on the record, we now have an obligation here at Nittany Lions Wire to make sure we hold these writers accountable for their predictions. While we certainly do not endorse massive ridicule online, we may reserve the right to an admission of guilt in the public eye should Penn State come out on top of Utah in the Rose Bowl. Obviously, I am having a little fun here with that comment.

You can see every one of the bowl game predictions from USA TODAY Sports’ writers here. Penn State will face Utah in the Rose Bowl on January 2, 2023.
