USA TODAY Sports lands Karl Dorrell on the hot seat

The 2022 college football season is still a long way away. But, it is time to examine some head coaches who are on the hot seat entering the season.

Scooby Axson of USA TODAY Sports revealed his list of coaches on the hot seat, and Colorado Buffaloes head coach Karl Dorrell landed on the list.

Here’s what Axson wrote about Dorrell:

Maybe Mel Tucker saw the writing on the wall because after one season at Colorado, he jumped ship to Michigan State, leaving Dorrell to fend for himself with a roster that surprised folks in 2020, but just wasn’t good enough to compete in the Pac-12 South last season. The problem with the Buffaloes was injuries and generating anything that looked like a competent offense, scoring 20 points or less in 10 of their 12 games and being absolutely non-competitive when they traveled. Most administrations want to see progress from year to year and if that doesn’t happen this season, it would be hard to justify bringing him back for a fourth.

On one hand, it would be a surprise to see Dorrell fired after just a few seasons in Boulder. The situation Dorrell inherited after Tucker was unique, plus COVID-19 struck in his first month on the job. The third-year head coach is now introducing a number of new assistants to the coaching staff and has had to endure a number of players leaving in the transfer portal, which is an entirely separate conversation.

Simply put, the Buffs haven’t yet improved, and if they don’t in 2022, then maybe Dorrell is looking for a new job when the 2023 season kicks off. Who knows.
