Upgrades are coming to Bud Walton Arena. The only question is when.

The University of Arkansas board of trustees has the ball in the frontcourt, anyway.

The school’s brass has moved forward with plans to renovate Bud Walton Arena in the coming years. Officially, the board recommended AECOM, Nabholz Construction and Cromwell Architects Engineers to study renovation options for the arena still called the Basketball Palace of Mid-America.

Bud Walton Arena opened in 1993 and was a state-of-the-art facility throughout that decade. Various upgrades have been installed since, including increasing capacity to 19,368 in 2008. With that number, BWA has the ninth-largest capacity in the sport.

But the concourses, bathrooms and lower-levels have only been lightly touched for most of the last 30 years. Fans are hoping the common areas are on-slate for an upgrade.

There is no timetable yet for when the remodel would take place. Plans are only in the initial stage.

Arkansas’ 2023-24 regular season is expected to start in late October or early November though no schedule has been announced. Monday the SEC released conference opponents for all teams, including the Razorbacks.
