University of South Dakota men's basketball team will take on Texas Rio Grande Valley in Sioux Falls

The University of South Dakota men’s basketball team will play Texas Rio Grande Valley in a non-conference game in Sioux Falls at the Sanford Pentagon on Nov. 10.

South Dakota is coming off a 12-19 season in their first season under head coach Eric Peterson. This will be the 12th time the Coyotes will compete at the Sanford Pentagon, while it will be the first time for Texas Rio Grande Valley.

“Every time we have played there it has been a tremendous experience for our team. The game is also a great way to engage our alumni, donors and fans in Sioux Falls,” Peterson said in a press release.

Texas Rio Grande Valley is a member of the Western Athletic Conference. They nearly doubled their win record from their previous season, going 15-17 in 2022-23 under third-year coach Matt Figger.

“I’m very excited about this game,” Figger said. “I know they’ve been playing college basketball at the Sanford Pentagon for a long time. It’s something I’ve always followed, and I know a lot of teams have played there. I’m excited to take my team to South Dakota. It’s a part of the United States that I think is a great place to visit that time of year. It’s a place a lot of players have never been to. I know how much they care about their basketball there. We’re really looking forward to the hospitality and visiting Sioux Falls for the first time.”

UTRGV and South Dakota both used to be in the Great West Conference. They competed in a combined five games during the 2010 and 2011 seasons with USD winning four of the five.
