Well here’s a new one.

Louisiana-Lafayette’s Darius Hoggins has been working with the first team at running back throughout preseason practice, but now he may miss the start of the season after breaking his jaw last week.

Hoggins, a fifth-year senior, wasn’t injured on the field. Ragin’ Cajuns coach Mark Hudspeth told reporters Monday that Hoggins fell while “reading his cell phone.” Seriously. He’s out three-to-four weeks and could miss the season opener on Sept. 2 against Southeastern Louisiana.

From the Daily Advertiser:

Ragin’ Cajuns coach Mark Hudspeth called the injury “non-football-related” and said it stemmed from “sort of a freak accident” late last week. The Cajun coach said Hoggins, who had not yet secured the starting job, was hurt when he fell “reading his cell phone.”

Hoggins – who did not take part in UL’s scrimmage last Saturday – also had some teeth knocked out, according to Hudspeth on Monday night.

Hudspeth didn’t reveal exactly how Hoggins fell, but I don’t think it’s hard to imagine. We’ve all been the person with their cell phone glued to their face while walking down the street. Usually you just end up bumping into somebody or something (or wandering into oncoming traffic), but to come out with a broken jaw and busted teeth? That’s not the best way to start your senior season.

Maybe Hoggins can do what I’ve been dreaming of doing for years: throwing my cell phone into the nearest body of water. I just stare at that stupid thing way too much.

Hudspeth knows what I’m talking about.

“Those cell phones will kill you,” Hudspeth said.

Hoggins has appeared in 27 games in his career, totaling 381 yards and two touchdowns on 64 carries. He was a backup to Elijah McGuire in 2016 and finished third on the team with 281 yards rushing.
