UIL State Swimming: Tuloso-Midway boys finish third in Class 4A

The Tuloso-Midway boys stood on the podium for the second straight year and Calallen swimming earned its first state medals in nearly a decade at the Class 4A UIL State Swimming and Diving Championships Friday at Josh Davis Natatorium in San Antonio.

The Warriors (240 points) finished third in a highly competitive team title race behind San Antonio Great Hearts Monte Vista (254) and Andrews when all the points were tallied.

Seniors Matteo Nisimblat and Alex Craig each broke state meet records in winning individual state championships for T-M.

Nisimblat touched in 21.63 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle to capture gold and Craig clocked 4:58.56 in the 500 free.

Nisimblat also earned second in the boys 100 free and Craig was the state silver medalist in 200 free.

The Warriors finished third in the 200 medley relay (Craig, Jarett Skoruppa, Gavin Lopez, Ryan Rosenbaum); 200 free relay (Nisimblat, Rosenbaum, Riley Williams, Craig) and 400 free relay (Lopez, Rosenbaum, Williams, Nisimblat).

Lopez also claimed an individual medal, taking third in 100 butterfly.

The T-M girls also earned a medal, as diver Julianna Garcia finished third in 1-meter diving.

Calallen finds the podium

After falling short last year in the first season of Class 4A swimming, Calallen won four medals on Friday — all in girls competition.

Junior Jenny Pickens took third in each of her individual events: the 200 and 500 free, the first Calallen state medalist in swimming since Jack McLaughlin (2015).

Pickens also anchored the Calallen 200 free relay (Naomi Low, Jasmine Trevino, Kaylee Larson, Pickens) to a second-place finish and 400 free relay (Low, Whitney Larson, K. Larson, Pickens) to third place.

The Wildcats finished sixth overall in the girls team standings.
