UFC on ESPN 35 bonuses: Marlon Vera gets $100,000 because of Font’s weight miss

The UFC handed out four post-fight bonuses after Saturday’s card, and one fighter got to double dip.

After UFC on ESPN 35, two fighters picked up an extra $50,000 for their performances in Las Vegas, and another cashed a $100,000 check. Check out the winners below.

Performance of the Night: Francisco Figueiredo

Francisco Figueiredo (13-4-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) needed little time to get things done in his flyweight bout against Daniel da Silva (11-3 MMA, 0-3 UFC). Da Silva landed a takedown, then tried to transition around to side control, then the north-south position. But Figueiredo was quick to grab da Silva’s leg, and just 78 seconds into the fight da Silva tapped to a perfect kneebar.

Performance of the Night: Joanderson Brito

Joanderson Brito (13-3-1 MMA, 1-2 UFC) was the biggest underdog on the main card in his featherweight fight against Andre Fili (21-9 MMA, 9-8-1 UFC). But it took Brito just 41 seconds to spoil Fili’s return to the cage after about a year away. Brito landed a huge right hook, then needed about 10 punches on the canvas to put Fili away in just 41 seconds.

Fight of the Night: Marlon Vera vs. Rob Font

Marlon Vera (21-7-1 MMA, 11-6 UFC) took a unanimous decision from Rob Font (19-6 MMA, 9-5 UFC), even though Font landed strikes at a crazy clip. Font landed more than 200 significant strikes, which was his third straight fight at more than 100. But Vera landed a bunch, as well, and he landed the far more punishing ones.

After 25 minutes, Font’s face was a swollen and bloody mess, and Vera’s looked like it barely had a scratch on it. Vera won with a pair of 49-46 scores and a 48-47.

But because Font missed weight Friday, not only did Vera get 20 percent of Font’s purse – he also got 100 percent of his share of the Fight of the Night bonus for $100,000 instead of the customary $50k.
