Tyrell Williams says Raiders rookie WR Bryan Edwards reminds him of Mike Williams

If you are keeping track at home, we’ve already seen comparisons of Davante Adams, Sterling Sharpe and Alshon Jeffery for rookie receiver Bryan Edwards. But as you can tell from the title, it’s time to add another one to the list.

In his media session on Wednesday, starting wide receiver Tyrell Williams discussed a number of issues regarding the Raiders. But one thing that stood out was his excitement for Edwards. Just like Jon Gruden, Greg Olson and Derek Carr, he was impressed with his size and physicality.

But Williams offered a new comparison, likening him to his former teammate with the Chargers in Mike Williams. Take a look at what Williams had to say about the team’s third-round pick at receiver:

“He’s been awesome. He works hard at really trying to make sure to know what to do. Like you said, he’s big, physical, runs good routes and he reminds me a lot of Mike Williams from the Chargers when he first came in as a rookie. I think he’s been awesome and I think he’s going to be a great receiver. Off the field, being able to be around him a little bit, I’m excited because I think he’s going to have a really good career here.”

While Edwards isn’t quite as big as Williams, they do win in similar ways. Both Williams and Edwards can win down the field despite not having elite speed. Each knows how to use their size and length to their advantage by boxing out smaller defenders.

Edwards isn’t quite ready to become a starting-level receiver, however, the team could look to utilize his size in the red zone. Like Williams, don’t be surprised if he finds a role in the NFL sooner rather than later.
