Sammy Watkins has foot problems again. Marquise Goodwin has been in the league’s concussion protocol twice since the beginning of August. With both players providing half of the Buffalo Bills real receiving corps, this leaves only Greg Salas and Robert Woods. To me, this is plainly not enough for the Bills especially if they still are attempting to make a postseason push.

Should either Goodwin or Watkins go down for an extended period of time, the Buffalo Bills will be put in a crunch at wide receiver. Needing to add depth, there are two receivers currently available that I believe could add some output for the team’s offense as well as provide starting experience necessary should they be called on to step into a starting role.

These players, former Miami Dolphins’ receiver Brian Hartline and former Philadelphia Eagles’ receiver Riley Cooper. While both are definitely past their prime, they could serve as solid midseason additions to help bolster an overall weak and thin Bills’ receiving core.

Brian Hartline is definitely in the latter year’s of his career. However, used as a third or fourth receiver, Hartline has the experience necessary to provide offense’s with a solid receiving option. Able to work against linebackers and some corners, Hartline would be the player called upon when it’s fourth-and-four and a short-to-intermediate pass is called.

Last season with the Browns, Hartline only appeared in 12-games but still managed to record 46-receptions — more than he had in 16-games the year before — and 523-yards with a single touchdown. Similar production is possible this season making Hartline a player the Bills should definitely look at.

Riley Cooper on the other hand is a bit of a wildcard. Though his production has definitely fallen, Cooper does provide a low risk option at the receiver position. Used as a fourth receiver or slot man, Cooper has the ability needed to run short and intermediate routes. Where he lacks elsewhere, he definitely makes up for in experience as a third-and-fourth string receiver.

Knowing what his role would be ahead of time, Cooper could see around 30-receptions this season if signed soon. Though he won’t be a big-name pickup, Cooper would provide a solid backup plan should either of the Bills current receivers go down with injuries.
