Metamora volleyball player voted Peoria high school athlete of the week

Izzy VandeSchraaf of the Metamora volleyball team was voted as the Journal Star athlete of the week.

The senior — who earned 265 of 920 votes — was a big part of the 10th-place finish at the Plainfield North Tournament over the weekend. She went for eight kills and a block as the Redbirds lost to Joliet Catholic in three sets of the Silver Bracket title match. The 5-foot-10 outside hitter posted a team-high nine kills, 17 digs and three blocks to beat Orland Park Sandburg. Metamora finished 3-2, putting VandeSchraaf and Esma Frieden on the all-tournament team.

Jackson Oldham, Dunlap football

Oldham emerged as the Eagles featured back in their 53-14 win over Galesburg on Friday. He rushed for 166 yards with three touchdowns. He carried it 11 times, averaging 15.1 yards per carry and having a long run of 65 yards.

Mason Boles, Eureka football

Boles came up big on both sides of the ball in Friday's 49-6 win over Canton. The senior running back/linebacker scored three touchdowns — two rushing and one receiving — with 77 total yards (55 rushing, 22 receiving). He added 10 tackles to go with one sack as well as a forced fumble and a recovery.

Allie Wiesenhofer, Fieldcrest volleyball

Wiesenhofer helped rally Fieldcrest to win the Hall Early Bird Tournament on Saturday. The senior outside hitter posted 12 kills and 23 digs as the Knights beat Sherrard, 23-25, 25-23, 25-23 in the title match. She tallied 43 kills and 51 digs in five match victories.

Sam Springer, Delavan boys cross country

The senior finished third out of 120 runners in the Light It Up Cross Country Meet on Saturday. Springer covered the 3-mile course in 15:56.70, recording the ninth-fastest time in Class 1A so far this season.

Sophia Ramirez, Washington girls cross country

The reigning Journal Star girls runner of the year started off her season with a runner-up finish at Normal West Cross Country Invitational on Saturday. Ramirez's 19:21.30 on the 3-mile course at Maxwell Park helped Washington win the 11-team meet. The Panther's 41 points were bolstered by Olivia Nordhielm (third place), Madeleine James (ninth) and Jayne Hermann (12th).

Connor Watson, East Peoria boys golf

Watson claimed the Limestone Invitational title last Monday, shooting an even par-72 at Coyote Creek. The junior took the crown by two strokes over Normal U-High's Brady Allen 2-over 74 at the 16-team tournament.

Morgan Grant, Illinois Valley Central girls golf

The senior golfer finished tied for 11th at the Streator Invitational last Monday. She shot a 9-over-81 as the highest female finisher in the predominantly boys tournament. Grant posted nine pars and a birdie on the par-4 sixth hole. She was two shots behind teammate Kai Morrow, who had a 7-over 79 as the Grey Ghosts finished fourth as a team.

Kayden Hudson, Peoria Notre Dame boys soccer

Hudson picked right up off his player of the year season in three victories last week. This helped the Irish extend their win streak to 12 in a row, dating back to last season's Class 2A state title. He scored two goals in last Monday's 5-0 win over reigning Class 1A state champ Quincy Notre Dame. The junior notched another score in Saturday's 3-0 win against Okemos (Mich.).

Caroline Potts, Pekin girls tennis

Potts and the Dragons beat the heat last Tuesday, facing Rock Island in a nonconference meeting. The No. 4 singles player won her match 9-7, but Rocky triumphed in the match, 7-2.
