Tuscaloosa area high school softball top 5 remains the same for the week of April 17
There is movement among The Tuscaloosa News' top-5 softball teams this week.
The high school softball season started in mid-February and, it is now in full swing nearing the postseason. Area tournaments begin next weekend and the state tournament is set for May 13-17.
Each week, The Tuscaloosa News will rank the top five teams in the area, regardless of classification. Here are the top-5 softball teams in the Tuscaloosa area, regardless of classification, for results through April 17.
1. Hillcrest (23-9-1)
Why: The Lady Patriots went 3-1-1 over the last week, picking up wins over Marbury (9-0), Homewood (4-1) and Hueytown (13-3), falling to Wetumpka (2-1) and tying at 2-all with Elmore County. They remain in the top spot in 6A, Area 6.
Last week: Ranked No. 1
2. Tuscaloosa County (22-8-1)
Why: The Lady Wildcats have a busy week ahead jumping into the final week and a half of regular season play. They have won three of their last five games and are currently in the No. 3 spot in 7A, Region 5.
Last week: Ranked No. 2
3. Northside (29-13-1)
Why: The Lady Rams remain in the top spot of 4A, Area 7 and are currently riding a seven-game winning streak. They conclude area play on April 25 vs. Hamilton.
Last week: Ranked No. 3

4. Winfield (28-3)
Why: The Lady Pirates are currently on a 10-game winning streak and are undefeated and in the top spot of 3A, Area 5. They have three regular season games remaining.
Last week: Ranked No. 4
5. Demopolis (14-11-1)
Why: The Lady Tigers dropped their Monday night game to Tuscaloosa County 1-0 but still remain at the top and undefeated in 5A, Area 6 play. Demopolis closes out regular season play next Monday against Bibb County.
Last week: Ranked No. 5
Other teams for consideration: American Christian Academy, Brookwood, Lamar County, Sulligent
