Tuesday's CIF-SS playoff results from girls soccer and girls water polo

Ava Dermott had a goal and an assist to lead Oak Park High girls soccer team to a 2-0 win over visiting Valencia on Tuesday night in a CIF-Southern Section Division 3 wild-card match.

Malea Johnson scored goal and Emily Rychlik had an assist as the Eagles (10-6-2) won a wild-card game for the second straight season.

Oak Park was one of three county girls soccer teams who advanced from Tuesday’s wild-card round.

One year after winning the first playoff game in four decades of program history, Channel Islands was able to celebrate advancing two years in a row.

Goalie Myranda Figueroa saved two penalty kicks and Yadira Ortiz converted the clinching spotkick as the Raiders advanced, 4-1 on PKs, after a 1-1 tie with host Burbank-Burroughs in a Division 5 wild-card match.

Joanna Reyna scored the goal and Jennifer Rojas, Galileah Tiscareno and Carolina Gomez also converted shootout PKs for Channel Islands (7-7-1).

Viviana Marmolejo scored two goals, including the game-winning goal in overtime, as visiting Rio Mesa came from behind to earn its first playoff win in eight years, 3-2, at Whittier-California in a Division 4 wild-card match.

Ella Rosenbaum had two assists, Kayla Golson scored a goal and Kenia Agraz also had an assist for Rio Mesa (11-6-6), which trailed 2-1 at the half after Golson’s opening left-footed strike.

“We struggled in the first half and just came out and really played together in the second,” said Rio Mesa coach Gonzalo Rodriguez.

Oak Park will visit Pasadena-Marshall Fundamental in Thursday’s first round. Channel Islands face Los Angeles-Geffen Academy at UCLA. Rio Mesa will visit top-seeded Arcadia.

The Ojai Valley boys soccer team fell at host Azusa, 8-0, Tuesday in a Division 7 wild-card game. Newbury Park Adventist fell 4-0 at Compton-Centennial a Division 7 wild-card game Monday.

Girls water polo

Five local girls water polo teams opened the CIF-SS playoffs with victories Tuesday.

Juliet Lazowski scored six goals, Valerie Lory had three goals, Jazmine Foster had two goals, and Paige Swensen, Jenna Rippe and Evie McCloud had goals to lead Ventura to a 14-10 win over Peninsula in a Division 2 wild-card game.

The Cougars advanced to a first-round game at Beckman on Wednesday.

Camarillo defeated visiting Westlake 11-8 and Royal beat Temple City 11-6 at home in Division 3 first-round games.

The Scorpions, who won the Coastal Canyon League title for the fourth straight season, will travel to Rancho Cucamonga for a second-round game Thursday. The Highlanders will play Redondo Union in a second-round game Thursday.

Buena defeated host Glendale 10-4 in a Division 4 first-round game. The Bulldogs will host Flintridge Prep in a second-round game Thursday.

Taylor Credle scored seven goals and Riya Korde had six goals to lead Calabasas to a 16-8 victory over host Crean Lutheran in a Division 4 first-round game. The Coyotes will host Western, which beat Nordhoff 13-7, in a second-round game Thursday.

Lindsey Ramirez had six goals and a steal and Julianna Magana finished with five goals and two steals for Santa Paula in its 16-15 loss to visiting Louisville in a Division 4 first-round game.

The Cardinals, who won a share of the Citrus Coast League title, finished their season 18-7 overall.
