Tua Tagovailoa becomes Dolphins’ first AFC Offensive Player of the Month in 30 years

MIAMI GARDENS — Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was named AFC Offensive Player of the Month for September on Thursday, the NFL announced.

Tagovailoa became the Dolphins’ first to earn the honor since quarterback Scott Mitchell won it in October 1993. Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Marino, whom Mitchell stepped in for when he tore his Achilles tendon in 1993, is the only other Miami player to earn it, in November 1986 and October 1988.

In three games in September, Tagovailoa completed 71.3 percent of passes for 1,024 yards, eight touchdowns and two interceptions.

Tagovailoa leads the league in passer rating (121.9) and yards per attempt (10.1). His 10.1 figure is a full 2 yards better than second place through Week 3. He ranks second in the NFL in passing yards and touchdowns. The 1,024 passing yards are most in franchise history through three games of a season.

Other Dolphins to win Player of the Month awards in recent seasons are outside linebacker Melvin Ingram (September 2022), inside linebacker Jerome Baker (December 2021) and kicker Jason Sanders, who won it on special teams in October and November 2020 and December 2019.

Pittsburgh Steelers edge defender T.J. Watt won the defensive award and Buffalo Bills kicker Tyler Bass won it on special teams in the AFC. The three to earn monthly honors in the NFC were San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey, Dallas Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons and Tampa Bay Buccaneers punter Jake Camarda.

The Dolphins’ Week 4 game Sunday starts their October slate against the Buffalo Bills in Orchard Park.
