Trojan swimmers beat Allegan

The Sturgis swim team won a road contest at Allegan on Tuesday, 91-81.

The Trojans only won three events, but had plenty of point-earning finishes on the night.

Matt Toner won the 200 freestyle race at 2:03.16.

Justin Herblet paced the field in the 100 freestyle at 52.29 seconds. Wyatt Dudek won the 500 freestyle with a time of 6:38.41.

In the 200 medley relay, the top Sturgis team of Lucas Tollefson, Luc VanderHulst, Wyatt Sand and Damian Avila Mejia placed second at 2:05.73. The team of Ellis VanWagner, EJ Miller, Hunter Diethrich and Vlad Hnitsa was third with a time of 2:15.51 and the team of Vallen Wagner, David Reynolds, Landon Powell and Dylan Kurzeja came in fourth at 2:31.07.

In the 200 free, Dudek came in second place at 2:19.83 while Hnitsa was fourth at 2:34.08.

The 200 individual medley saw Sturgis’ Miller finish second at 2:37.79. Diethrich finished third at 3:00.47 and Avila Mejia came in fourth at 3:17.88.

Herblet nearly won the 50 freestyle at 23.14 seconds. He finished just behind Titus Smith, who had a time of 22.64 seconds in the race. Sturgis also saw Dalton Tisdel swim to third at 25.43 seconds, Charles Frost was fourth at 25.51 seconds.

In the 100 butterfly, Frost came in second at 1:07.07. Sand was third at 1:13.24 and VanWagner came in fourth position at 1:20.09.

Sturgis got a third-place finish from Tisdel in the 100 freestyle at 56.61 seconds. VanderHulst was sixth at 1:03.01.

Diethrich came in second place in the 500 freestyle at 6:54.76, Diego Lara Flores was fifth overall at 7:37.01 in that race.

Sturgis’ 200 freestyle relay team of Toner, Frost, Tisdel and Herblet came in second place at 1:37.02. Allegan’s best team finished with a first-place time of 1:34.62 in that event.

Miller, Hnitsa, Avila Mejia and Sand teammed up for fourth in the 200 freestyle relay at 1:51.05, the team of VanWagner, Gabe Powell, Max Scheske and Dudek was fourth with a time of 2:00.98.

In the backstroke, Toner came in second at 1:02.55. Tollefson finished third at 1:18.46 and Landon Powell was fourth at 1:26.09.

Miller finished second in the 100 breaststroke at 1:19.22. VanderHulst was third at 1:20.07.

The final race of the day, the 400 freestyle relay, saw Sturgis finish second and third.

The team of Sand, Avila Mejia, Frost and Tisdel had a time of 4:03.55 for second, the team of Toner, Tollefson, VanderHulst and Herblet came in third at 4:17.53.
