UTEP football coach Scotty Walden has a reputation as a high-energy, some might say madman, which Miners fans have figured out for a while now.
At Thursday night's men's basketball game against Louisiana Tech, Walden was introduced with his entire coaching staff at halftime, giving him a chance to make a rousing speech that brought much of the Don Haskins Center crowd to its feet.
He saved the bigger part for the second half. That's when the 34-year-old ran out on the court shirtless, his chest painted with blue with an orange Miner pickaxe on his chest and "Win the West" on his back.
He leaped up on the press table to exhort the crowd, then ran over to the student section to celebrate. He spent the rest of the game trying to distract Louisiana Tech free-throw shooters, who might have assumed he was just an overly hyped up history major.
It even worked to a point as Louisiana Tech struggled with free-throw shooting, though the first-place team in Conference USA eventually figured it out enough to outlast the Miners.
