Top performers among Erie County athletes for the week of Feb. 5-10

The Erie Times-News has noted some of the best athletic efforts by Erie County students throughout District 10's winter sports season. That trend resumes with top performances during the first full week of February.

Some of those athletes are:

Boys wrestling

Nolan Gummerson, Harbor Creek: The 121-pounder recorded a 37-second fall amid a 20-0 start for the Huskies, who beat the Union City Bears 44-27.

Brady Bowers, Fort LeBoeuf: His 5-2 decision in the 121 match capped a 15-0 start for the Bison, who held on for a 25-23 victory vs. Warrior Run in the first round of the PIAA's Class 2A team tournament at Hershey.

Billy Cole, Union City: The freshman recorded a first-period technical fall in the 133 match of the Bears’ 47-22 dual victory vs. Mercer.

Willem Berry, Harbor Creek: The 160-pound junior, in varsity debut, recorded a 44-second pin that helped the Huskies beat Erie High 54-21 in a non-region dual.

Jack Sangl, Fort LeBoeuf: His pin in the 215 match gave the Bison an insurmountable lead when they eliminated District 7 Mt. Pleasant 40-28 in the pigtail round of the PIAA 2A team tournament.

Boys basketball

Craig Buckner, Mercyhurst Prep: His 28-point effort helped the Lakers to their second win in a 24-hour span, a 71-66 victory over Erie High. ... His dunk highlighted a 20-point performance when Mercyhurst avenged an earlier loss to Iroquois with its 55-44 victory at Lawrence Park.

Lucas Rupp, Seneca: The Bobcats beat Erie First Christian 41-36 with the aid of his 14 points. ... His 18 points also helped Seneca beat the Northwestern Wildcats 63-26.

Tyler Grove, McDowell: His 30-point effort was 10 more than the Trojans’ margin of victory for their 71-51 win at State College.

Geremia Dell’omo, Girard: The YellowJackets, with the assistance of his 19-point effort, clinched a share of Region 4’s championship with their 67-27 victory vs. Northwestern.

Carter Crozier, North East: His 18 points accounted for half of the Grapepickers’ total when they beat Fairview 36-25.

Jacob Zietz, General McLane: The Lancers beat the rival Fort LeBoeuf Bison 66-54 in part from his 29-point performance.

Layveon Gore, Erie High: He 11 points were enough to lead the Royals in scoring when they defeated the Harbor Creek Huskies 43-38.

Anthony Blanks, Erie High: The Royals, aided by his 16-point effort, exceeded the century mark when they routed Dunkirk (New York) 105-38.

Kamden Kramer, McDowell: The Trojans required each of his 27 points en route to their 59-51 non-region win against District 7’s Pine-Richland. ... The day before, he converted six three-pointers, which highlighted a 24-point performance amid McDowell's 68-27 win against Fort LeBoeuf.

J.J. Ganska, Mercyhurst Prep: The Lakers beat Erie First Christian 76-42 with the aid of his 15 points.

Kenny Godoy, Girard: The YellowJackets defeated the rival Fairview Tigers 56-43 in part because of his 18 points.

Amaree Pickens, Cathedral Prep: His 13 points were the most in the Ramblers’ balanced scoring when they beat General McLane 69-53.

Willie Shunk, North East: He totaled 14 points for the Grapepickers during their 56-43 win against Iroquois.

Girls basketball

Brooke Przybylski, Harbor Creek: Her 25 points aided the Huskies, who defeated the Conneaut (Pennsylvania) Eagles 59-45.

Jayden McBride, Cathedral Prep: The Georgetown University recruit recorded 16 points when the Ramblers beat Solon (Ohio) 60-42.

Makayla Presser-Palmer, Northwestern: Her 18 points highlighted the Wildcats’ 52-25 win against the rival Girard YellowJackets. ... Her previous performance for Northwestern included 24 points and 15 rebounds the team won 47-37 against Mercyhurst Prep.

Gigi Gaston, North East: She totaled 18 points when the Grapepickers defeated Seneca 49-36.

Paige Garrity, Fairview: She scored 10 of her 17 points during the fourth quarter of the Tigers’ 32-17 non-region victory vs. Erie High. ... Earlier in the week, the freshman scored 18 points, all on three-point goals, when Fairview defeated the Fort LeBoeuf Bison 54-23.

Mikaela Bennett, McDowell: Her double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds highlighted the Trojans’ 50-37 victory vs. General McLane.

Addie Biel, Cathedral Prep: The Ramblers routed Fort LeBoeuf 72-34 in part because of her 24 points.

Ari Reap, Erie High: Her 18 rebounds nearly matched her 22 points when the Royals beat Harbor Creek 60-44.

Lena Walz, Cathedral Prep: The St. Bonaventure University recruit recorded six three-pointers amid her total of 26 when the Ramblers routed the rival McDowell Trojans 54-27.

Samantha Probst, North East: She totaled 16 points during the Grapepickers’ 55-19 victory vs. Titusville.

Haylee Farrell, Seneca: Her 12 points led the Bobcats when they beat the Iroquois Braves 49-16.

Boys swimming/diving

Clark Carney, Fairview: He was a four-time winner amid the Tigers’ 126-21 dual victory vs. Iroquois.

Evan Calvert, Cathedral Prep: The Rose-Hulman Institute recruit won twice for the Ramblers when they defeated the host McDowell Trojans 95-88.

Galen Shepherd, General McLane: He anchored two relays to victory, including first place in the Region 2 dual’s decisive 400-yard freestyle finale, when the Lancers defeated North East 83-71.

Alain Marley, Erie High: The Royals defeated the Mercyhurst Prep Lakers 53-28 with the aid of his four victories.

Caleb Daubenspeck, Union City: His four victories helped the Bears beat Girard 110-46 in a Region 2 dual.

Finn Jensen, Fairview: He started legs for the Tigers’ three first-place relays and won the 200 individual medley during the Tigers’ 120-59 Region 2 dual victory vs. Corry.

Ben Smith, Girard: He led off two victorious relays and added another first-place effort in the 50 free when the YellowJackets beat Iroquois 65-46.

Joel White, Erie High: His three victories included an individual first in the 100 breaststroke when the Royals beat the Warren Dragons 50-24 in the teams’ Region 3 dual.

Ben Bashline, General McLane: He was a four-time victor when the Lancers faced Harbor Creek in a Region 2 dual.

Isaac Smith, Harbor Creek: The freshman continued to consistently win off the springboard and in the pool (200 free) for the Huskies during their Region 2 dual against General McLane.

Jack Raimy, Cathedral Prep: He led off and anchored relays for half of his four victories when the Ramblers defeated Meadville 140-24.

Girls swimming/diving

Jillian Dennis, Fairview: Her four victories also helped the Tigers beat Iroquois 104-59 in a Region 2 dual. ... Earlier, she won three events for Fairview when the team beat Corry 101-75.

Lillian Gee, General McLane: Her first-place performance off the springboard (199.20 points) and 400-yard freestyle relay win in the pool aided the Lancers when they beat North East 117-66.

Ellie Natemeier, Cathedral Prep: Her four victories helped the Ramblers win 113-72 at Region 3 rival McDowell.

Ellie Wertz, Erie High: She anchored the Royals’ 400 free relay for the last of her three victories during their 61-41 Region 3 win over Mercyhurst Prep.

Baileigh Marino, Girard: She was a four-time victor for the YellowJackets when they won 107-60 against the Union City Bears.

Anna Mitchell, Harbor Creek: She was a triple victor during the Huskies’ Region 2 dual against General McLane.

Maria Costa, Cathedral Prep: She was a four-time victor for the Ramblers when they defeated the Meadville Bulldogs 114-63 in a Region 3 dual.

Grace Freer, Iroquois: Her four victories also helped the Braves beat the Girard YellowJackets 100-67.

Emma Shade, General McLane: She was a four-time winner for the Lancers during their Region 2 dual vs. Harbor Creek.

Girls bowling

Taylor Kretz, McDowell: The Trojans, aided by her 679 series, concluded their perfect 9-0 Metro League season with a 27-1 victory vs. Cathedral Prep at Eastland Bowl.

Kayden Thomas, Mercyhurst Prep: The freshman’s 454 series was the highest for the Lakers when they beat Erie High 22-6 in the teams’ Metro League finale.

Boys indoor track and field

Elijah Flemings, Erie High: He anchored the Royals to a first-place finish in the 3,200-meter relay (9 minutes, 4.69 seconds) during a Tri-State Track and Field Coaches Association meet at Edinboro University’s Zafirovski Sports and Recreation Center.

Hockey

Ethan Cunningham, Cathedral Prep: His goal capped off a 3-0 second period for the Ramblers, who won 4-1 over Baldwin at Castle Shannon's Ice Castle Arena.
